Today I bought a big drill, around 546kg according to this, its a Meddings Pacera articulated radial drill A10. I have been looking for a slow drill for metalwork and this has the gearbox, and a deep throat (steady!) for woodworking so this fits the bill. I also wanted rack and pinion on the pillar which this has. It looks like it needs a bit of TLC and apprentice has been let loose with a paint pot at some point but I don't mind that. I just have to go an pick it up in the next couple of weeks,

The guy I bought my Meddings LF1 from was only selling it as he had bought a gearbox version like you have only it was a standard version without the articulation. They are quite sought after & fetch good prices though I guess yours would be cheaper due to its size. I know he wouldn't part with his despite me making a generous offer!

I think one of the gears in the head was made from phenol and prone to damage, would be worth looking at before using it.

I wouldn't like to try raising / lowering that table without a rack and pinion - it's hard enough on my standard Meddings MF4. These photos reminded me of something I was thinking about a long time and meant to ask about - why do they machine t slots into the base of them? It must be one of them things that might seem like a good idea to include but ultimately pointless unless I am missing something?

^^ probably so you can swing the table out of the way and fix larger items to the base.

I guessed that and feasible on the one above as it looks like you could lower the head low enough that the quill might reach near to the base. With my cast pedestal you'd still need a 2' bit too reach the work or more sensibly be able to raise the work 2' above the base. Obviously there must have been a reason for it but I've never come across photos ever showing the base slots on a pillar drill being used.

We've got 2 Meddings drills in our workshop and they are bullet proof, must be well over 30 years old and take whatever's thrown at them.

I'm guessing the belt cover is the original colour which isn't bad.

I have the Pacera MB4 and one of the gears in the gearbox is phenolic, looked ok when I replaced the seals in mine (that were all cracked and leaking out the contents of the gearbox). They are excellent on the low speed, especially if you also have a variable frequency drive
