Might as well give my opinion:
looks ok to me. I agree an extra 4" extension would make it look a lot better but as long as it's well secured at the front so it can't move backwards then surely as long as the rear tyre is on the bed it will be fine. You see steel stock trucks carrying stuff on an angle with the back of the load hanging over the bed all the time and never panic cos if its secured enough it won't go anywhere.
I'd be more concerned about the farmers load tying abilities once he gets his shiny new tractor; one ratchet strap to hold 20 round bales on a trailer....

At the end of the day,its the driver responsibility for his/her own load,i was taught that if you dont think its safe you dont move it

I can assure you it is, it makes no difference what angle the tractor is parked at, gravity acts downwards.

Im not on about gravity someone stated the ratchet will pull it of the back but it wont it will pull it forward due to the tractor pointing uphill if it was all exactly the same but the bed was level then the strap would be pulling it of the back but that slight difference in agle will change it

No, the strap passes below (but only just) the centre of the wheel, so the force on the strap is trying to rotate the wheel anti-clockwise which will tend to roll it off the trailer

But it cant go anywhereas the strap is not at the furthest rearward part of the tyre so as it turns the wheel it will tighten the only way thet strap can loosen is if the tractor moves forwards

We get steel delivered like that, twice we've had a delivery of a dozen 30' 6"x2"x 6mm galv channel slide off on route. Once in the middle of Wakefield, and the other time on on a slip road off the A1 (that driver didn't even know he'd lost them) luckily on both occasions nobody was hurt.

A rough rule of transport. Chain or strop capacity required = 2 x the weight to hold it back. 1 x the weight to stop it coming back over. and 1- 1.5 x the weight to stop it moving left and the same for right. Ratchet straps are probably rated 2 tons each. Securing point on trailer needs to be minimum 2 tons SWL per side per ratchet strap.
Without the full picture, to me it looks insecure. Extra straps or better still chains through the counter weight or towing eye and the rear hitch would make a huge difference. Extending the rear deck (the black bit) by a foot or so would make a difference visually and probably reduce the bouncing on the balloon tyres.

If the wheel turns anticlockwise the strap will slacken, but the movement of the tractor backwards will cause it to tighten - you need to do the maths to determine the net result. If it turns clockwise it will tighten (but the tractor moving forwards will slacken it) until it forms a diameter, then further rotation will slacken it and the forward motion of the tractor will slacken it further.

I do think you are wrong, the tightest possible point would be a line directly through the centre of the hub, but any movement in either direction would loosen the strap. In that picture if you jacked that back wheel up and took the handbrake off and turned the tyre anti clockwise the strap would slacken and fall off.

Bouncy things are them there tractor tyres, cant see much in the way of anchoring the thing down and stopping it getting bucked off sideways.

Agreed with bob, get some decently chains on it. It *probably* will never come off but I'd much prefer to be over the top with the rigging than just enough.

And the comments on steel stock trucks, the amount of times i unloaded one with a forklift and as you start to lift the low end of the beam it starts to run down

chains would make no differance as the hooks can only go into the decking and that's 3mm pressed steel without seeing the front end as to what the straps are hooked too

here is another accident waiting to happen this picture taken on a public road no way is either the car or the trailer in any way capable of legally towing that think that tractor is about say 5 ton or more

That is unbelievable. Im really not the snitching type but i probably would have phoned that in. Im sure most of us have towed slightly over weight but that is serious.

Before I had camera phone I saw an escort van with a 2 wheeled trailer carrying a 3 ton 360 digger, parked with two wheels well up on the pavement straddling double yellow line, outside the village pub, pretty sure the driver was in the pub...

I'd say that's dangerous. The axle is just off the back of the lorry.
I genuinely think it's ridiculous how agri movers have to strap tractors! I'm glad I'm not moving them.

I sometimes transport customers cars and use the cross method that the pro's (AA RAC) use, and strap all 4 wheels.

I use the blue straps (as used on those tractors) and they are rated as 1 tonne use & 2 tonne breaking strain.


To hold a tractor you might as well use binder twine.

I genuinely think it's ridiculous how agri movers have to strap tractors! I'm glad I'm not moving them.

I'm not trying to be clever here but how would you strap down a tractor ? I've only ever seen them strapped in that fashion. From what I've seen they are awkward items with limited means of being held securely.

To hold a tractor you might as well use binder twine.

Don't give them ideas they use it for just about everything else...

Years ago I used the same method to hold a Volvo 244 to a transporter trailer. The rig started swaying and eventually tipped the trailer on its side with the Landrover still hitched although the rear wheels were in the air. Put it into 4 wd and pulled it back down. The Volvo never moved and was undamaged. Bent the a frame on the trailer and the LR rear cross member. No wonder the pros use this method.
