Just a very basic phone for me, it does calls & text and not much else, the camera is rubbish, maximum 640x480 res anybody ? but it's one saving grace (and why I bought it) is battery life, after a week it's still well over half full. The wife has a smart phone that needs recharging every other day, sometimes everyday if she's been busy on it, I can't be doing with that.

You can certainly take screen shots of maps to look at I've not tried any mapping whilst off line

I have had a couple of cheapish Chinese Android phones, first one didn't have any protection on the speaker and all the grindings went into it and pierced the speaker, got a new speaker sent from China and put a bit of sellotape over the speaker and then dropped it in the harbour a week or so later. I then got a Cubot X5Pro, quite a nice phone until I was welding some corroded Alu on a boat and a piece of molten alu landed on the speaker and melted a hole right through 
Got another Cubot and so far I have remembered to keep it out of the way of molten Alu
I stated off with £5 goodybag from GiffGaff and after a few months decided I was wasting my money so decided just to go Pay as you go, £10 lasts me about 4 months
I use my phone a lot for taking photos and using aps such as the threading ap or the milling feeds and speeds ap or the tidal prediction ap. Also use it for synchronising my 3d drawings and CAM between workshop and home, so really I don't use it as a phone much but more a mini computer.
Oh also use it for tracking the dog if he decides to go wandering

ive got a not so smart huawie on pay as go now. my insurance cost £30 ( another new phone in the draw ) and its £15 ish a month now. i did have better phones and payed EE much money a month service that was crap at best well if it worked you chould watch a film in full HD, but if it wouldnt do that it would barely make a call if you were lucky and that was most of the time

I use Locus Maps (Android). They will accept maps in RMaps SQ Lite format, these in return can be generated by Mobile Atlas Creator (MOBAC) on a PC. Basically you load a map into MOBAC from any of the free mapping services, pick the bits you want, save the tiles and load them onto your smartphone/tablet and Locus will read them. Once you've generated your tiles they don't expire datewise.
From there you can record your tracks, generate routes, add waypoints and loads of other stuff.
I have the cheapest £8 nokia, it makes phone calls & texts. I keep dropping them in the creek or bottom of boats & would be pig sick if i did that with an expensive smart phone. The teachers at work look at my old phone as if it is something they stepped in! I have no need for one.
Sounds very similar to mine, Nokia 108 IIRC.

can you contact the past with itI would think I have the oldest one on here, an Ericsson T28s, does all I want it to do. If I need to be on the internet I'll use the computer. My wife tells me not to use it in public when she's with me.

I find calendar and notes useful too, for keeping track of work etc. A good GPS/satnav is very handy. I use my phone more than the laptop, nowadays.
