Yep that's the key.
Mig has a very sneaky way of looking nice yet hiding some serious LOF defects.

Although i'm rubbish at all types of welding i will share.

nothing wrong with those at all daz. Nice clean spatter free runs.

This is how any important structural, load bearing part should look when a professional has welded it using a 1 candle power mig. please ignore the poor welding on the base plate where it attaches to the chassis, it's far too smooth to have any strength

My only criticism would be perhaps those sharp burs above the through holes want dressing up. Looks great otherwise.

I was actually bollocked once for cleaning the rag of off agri gate handles being told farmers have tough hands. Mind you in the same week got told not to chip my welds, [waisting time] just paint over, and when painting don't mind the runs as farmers like to think you used plenty of paint, what a first week

It's the proper way to do it maffy if your welding in the flat position.
We shouldn't compromise weld quality just because it's a more exciting way of welding.

more than strong enough man doesnt make a difference. wouldnt do it structural welding or nothing

It's all just a bit of banter, fat slugs are not the way. You want to be aiming for a neat, flat weld profile with no cold rolling or excess spatter. I am not going to go over old ground as to why weaving, whipping or generally wandering about is not the best idea as this has been covered many times in the past. Keep practicing fella, you'll get there in the endo. We do a lot of welder testing and we get more failures on MAG fillet welds in the PB position and its mainly due to people weaving/whipping as can be seen in the macro section. Keep it simple with stringer beads

i whipped on a flat 2mm-3mm passed. then done a vertical uphill 6mm-12mm passed never done it before only had an hour to practice. piece of ****. (no whip on vertical uphill tho obvs triangle motion)

So you're saying we are wrong? The combined knowledge of Richard, who is a certified welding inspector and backpurge who is a professional welder (running his own business iirc). I've been in places where people have passed tests, whipping, im not saying you can'y , but testing and research done, has shown that 7 out of 10 times, that weld would have defects and inclusions.
You should buy yourself a book, "The science and practice of welding", you may reconsider your opinions. Or go and look on instagram for a fellow with the username mig_man. Karl is a time served mig welder working in probably one of the largest structural engineering firms in the uk with more certifications than you could shake a stick at. There are no whip & pause welds on his page I can assure you of that.

On that pic it was a borrowed Kemppi (about 400 amp?) and a new Esab L401, my previous Arcos Lincoln had packed up just before I started that job.
First mig I got for Alu was a Sterling (180AMP I think) then got the Arcos Lincoln (400 amp?) , have just recently got an R-Tech MTS255S and I am liking it a lot. Still have the Esab but hardly use it now although was using it yesterday as only 13 amp single and 3 phase (3pin and earth) available where I was doing the job. Was gusting 50MPH and blowing through snow so welding was a pain

Lets see if I get this right! on the picture I posted as stated using brother in laws mig ,at his place..and he is a certified welder, I wanted to turn machine,lincoln 185, flat out on volts and adjust wire speed accordingly, but he insisted on setting volts at about position 4 and adjusted wire , so I welded the test piece shown.It would have been really rude/difficult to dis agree as he is certified,his kit,his property etc.
Now would I have been correct in ploughing in with higher voltage ?the material is 4mm and 12mm. thanks Arther

I'm not a mig Welder I freely admit it but yes I'm qualified to pick out the good the bad and the ugly. I have my 3.2 so in theory I can teach and carry out examination on that s###. Not that I've ever gone down that avenue other than paying for and sitting the course lol.
