I tell my better half that when she exclaims "another angle grinder, how may do you have now?" The last one was a 9 inch though and it's my only one (got a couple of Aldi ones a makita and a bosch that was free!), but I suspect she just humours me when I try to explain.

I'm not brave enough to ask how many pairs of shoes she has! She might tell me! Whenever I explain my tool buying it just results in that same "special" look it get.

Recently she commented that if I looked at porn as much as I did at tools she would say I had a real big problem.

Anyway, like several others my 5" lidl/parkside grinder has took serious abuse & still lives. Mine has a wire brush fitted most of the time with the variable speed set low enough so that if it catches the brush stops rather than jump off the work piece & attack you.

I've always thought that decent brand grinders like dewalt are cheap enough (£40-£60ish) and there's always one on offer somewhere, they usually have a 3 year warranty, and are much better made and nicer to use than one from lidl! I've used the cheap ones and whilst they do a job they're not a patch on a good brand one. Even if I only use it a couple of times a week it's not worth the £20 saving to me.

(this is just my opinion, other opinions are available!)

I have 3 wickes grinders they are horrible to use compared to the others my bosch one is the nicest to use followed by the hitachi then the aldi one so they aint all bad

Only problem I have found with the Lidl / Aldi grinders are the speed controlers which move all by themselves, I can set it running slowly and before long the wheel is in angry porcupine mode.

Ran the grinder cutting off a piece of angle, After 3 mins the gearbox was just about touchable about the same temperature of a freshly poured coffee held on the outside of the cup.

I find the cheap power tools in skips all the time, and nearly all of them cannot be repaired, usually the brushes have arc'ed and destroyed the commutator, or the brush holders have melted. The gearboxes are often full of swarf from the soft gears.

Err, you do realise that (apart from needing one for a flap and one for a poly disk) you also need one of everything for 4", the common 4.5", 5", 7" and of course the big 9". Plus a set of low profile head grinders too...

TBH after being supplied with a nasty POS Draper grinder at work which was damn horrible (don't miss it following its death!) I would agree with you.
However, I got an Aldi one because of it having variable speed for use on wire wheels and for the use it'll get it doing that there's no way to justify an expensive one and it's actually quite smooth and nice to use! So much so I want to get more - here's hoping I didn't get the odd good one...!

I have two of those Lidl ones. I didn't really need a 5" grinder but I wanted the variable speed control out of them for a machine that doesn't have it but needs it. That hasn't stopped me from using them extensively though. I keep a thin disc on one and a flexi disc on the other - saves me swapping discs about. Like some people her eI have also cut the silly bottom half of the guard away.

Hmm, I don't have a low profile grinder, those metabo pan head type ones look good.
Perhaps I need to review my grinder requirements and current tooling list!

Or maybe I should wait until the head of the treasury has forgotten about the last one I bought.

i do have a 9" grinder for when i need the depth of cut to cut bricks/slabs etc.
