What sort of RPM is a good speed for a capstan?

The capstan I used was engine driven off the crank in its original application so I assumed 1000-1500 rpm shaft speed, because the little engine is no match for the original in terms of torque I bought the version with the reduction gearbox so it could be run at 3000rpm without increasing winch speed. I hope this makes sense, I am old you know

I have an old belt drive PTO pulley from a Ferguson TE20 sat under the bench doing nothing, I'm wondering if I can gear it down enough and coble some sides together on the belt drive drum. Just wondering what sort of speed the drum should turn at.
I guess the drum is about 200mm diameter so that's a circumference of 628mm.
If the drum is turning at 30rpm that's about 19m per minute or 310mm per second ( 1 foot every second).
Sounds a bit fast?
10 rpm would give 1 foot every 3 seconds which sounds slow to me so maybe 20rpm which would be about 1 foot every 1.5 seconds.

The John Deere has a PTO speed of 540rpm at an engine speed of 2000rpm = 270rpm PTO at 1000rpm engine speed.
So a reduction box of 12 or 15 to 1 should give me the right ball park speed if the Fergies pulley is 1 to 1.

You could do the reduction on that with chain and sprockets, if the angle drive is bevel gears there wont be any natural brake so you may need to fit one. The landy capstan is worm gear and the engine has a centrifugal clutch so if its on tickover it stops winching but the drum wont run backwards.

Great build Bob You certainly have some great kit., I fitted one of those capstan winches to the front of my Landy in the late 70s, Picked it up dirt cheap but had to make the missing drive shaft etc and make the crank pulley dog, Only used it a few times but excellent control over the pulling, Couple of round turns on the capstan and away you go, Very heavy piece of kit, but built to last,

good winches, but ive watched someone put too many turns on and have the rope run overitself on the drum meaning you cant slip it. funny how long it takes someone panicking to realise they jsut need to turn the engine off.........

Brunnet, that's a new one on me .im no expert on the subject tho . Calling @8ob ( is that how that's done? not into this hashtag stuff ) What kind of age would that timberjack be 1980's maybe .?
I used to carry round timber on a flatbed trailer used to be fascinated by the timber forwarders used to load my trailer. The John deeres with the cab that swivelled round with the crane boom especially . I thought to myself that's a good idea , till it goes wrong , and yea they had some trouble with them !

Pulled off the web, 360 went from 1999 to 2003. Brunett was old when I worked it, that was back in the late 90’s. I would guess it came from the late 70’s early 80’s.
