Spent Brass

Made this during the week for my father. .50cal round flattened out for the main body and I tried to re-use a .303 Lee Enfield round for the centre but it was too corroded so I lathed a replica up from Brass bar and soldered in a blob to replicate the primer. Fluted the petals with a pair of rounded-off needle nosed pliers. An hour well spent.
Next time I'll try to find some better .303 or maybe engrave it with something appropriate.

Oooo. Thanks! I was hunting around for something suitable in the local junk shops.

The .270 might be a good solution, the .303 round being just a bit too small to make one complete Poppy. Needs to have a case about 10% bigger than a .303 to make a Poppy full size.

I've got a .410 shotgun Enfield and bought some blanks to use on Bonfire night, hence the original idea. They split like crazy when fired from a .410 so if I can't find a bigger round I may have to hammer some .303 blank casings to get a large enough piece of brass to make a Poppy that is big enough for the end of the round to be the correct scale, if that makes sense.

If anyone has any suggestions....fire away!

PS. If anyone has a .303 Enfield and needs someone to pull the trigger for them...

270 and 243 are both recessed rim so will actually be less defined also thicker in the brass wall with less width. In the case of 243 markedly shorter.

I was buying shotgun cartridges yesterday off a friend who is a gun dealer and works from home. Coincidently i asked him about lee enfields for sale and he had one in stock. A wartime savage no.4 mk1*. Not in bad nick. I do have a hankering for an old .303.

Can they be posted? I could Paypal you the postage if that works. I'm sure they could be used to make another piece of artwork that I had in mind....little stands to hold a Poppy stem, like a Vase, and engraved with a name.

Is it normally the case that brass gets recycled? I look about for used rounds but didn't stumble on any supply. Do you need a Class 1 licence and a .303 ticket to buy new empty casings?

Same here, out of interest how did he want. I was in Germany this time last yr, in a very large [and expensive ]gun shop. About 15 WWII firearms many German, but a surprising amount of English, esp .303

Previously I made some fridge magnets from 12 bore bases with magnets glued inside. I also had ideas for making a chess set from rifle rounds. 9mm rounds would make nice Pawns and then long rounds carved with appropriate tops for the back row.

I paid £300 for a matching-numbers Number1 Mk3* rebuilt in the 40s and converted to .410 about 10 years ago just before I got it. The wood all matches and it polishes up nicely. The brasswork on the buttplate is also polished up to perfection. A living piece of historical artwork.

No! Henry kranks will send them you without primers or powder / bullets they are just brass tubes

Thought so. A mate bought a Henry Martini rebored to 20g. It still made a mess with rilfed slugs.

Shox, the rifle was taken in for storage a few years ago, the chap who owns it hasn't really bothered with it since, so the dealer said he would ring him and ask what he intends to do with it. I asked him what he considered a fair value and he reckoned somewhere between 400-500 euros. Old military rifles have risen in value a fair bit in the past few years. Areal bargain is the swiss k31 in 7.5mm, they are real quality and make enfields and mausers look like piles of junk.

Used so i am told by the army for sentry duty and foraging for extra meat.
