Actually the 1800 watt kettle may take longer AND cost more because whilst it's heating it's also losing heat.

those are my views too, also I like the flat plate ones, as apposed to the element type coz I heat one cups worth at a time usually, and cant be doin waiting for 3 cups worth to boil to make one cup of tea, then two cups worth is left in the kettle to go cold !! Missus cant understand the logic !! she half fills it to save keeping putting water in.

Latent heat (of vapourisation) only kicks in at boiling point, the saving is the difference between boiling point and the initial temperature of the water.

The results are in--------all from cold ambient water temp one cup only took 45 secs to switch off point --------3 cups took 1 min 55 sec ------- one minute 10 sec extra by that time I have died of thirst and the adverts have finished and I have missed the plot because of the time taken to walk down the hall and back into the front room

Does that mean the next time you will switch on, the element will be partially uncovered ?? I dont like that, it means causing hot spots on the pyro. and possible 'cut out' tripping which takes even longer to reset. which means missing five minutes of eastenders -----HUM not all bad then ??

I always make sure the element is completely covered, including the bit between the spiral in the bottom and where it connects to the switch, even though the gauge on the side indicates 1 mug just covers the spiral.

OK talking of kettles.

Back in the 90's I had a kettle with a gold plated element.

No seriously it was supposed to stop lime scale on the element. So did it work?????????????????

YES!! never any lime scale on the element. It was a brilliant kettle.

My question is what ever happened to that technology? I'm just wondering why you never see it anymore? does the technology not work with the these modern flat bottom types?

You can get little mesh things that sit in the kettle, they cost about 50p from the kitchen places on the high street and you will never have any limescale again

flat bottom or concealed element electric kettle are getting quite common now as you can see there is no element to cover just heats by the flat plate at bottom where element is hidden and passes heat direct into virtually as little water as you like and also not many places for limescale to attack, or clean out.

Also you can get induction kettles they are call 'instant boil' I havnt tried one yet but water is heated in a flash so they say

"Latent Heat" is a physical property of a fluid, there's latent heat of fusion (melting/solidifyin) and vapourisation (boiling & and condensing). Latent actually means "hidden"

I mean the temperature of the water in the kettle. Using the word 'latent' to mean 'remaining'.

Water comes out of our tap at about 5 degrees C, whereas ambient temperature is about an average of 20?

It takes more energy to raise the water temperature from 5-100~ degrees than from 20.

The water left in the kettle will not drop below ambient temperature, if it's even left long enough between boils to drop that far.

In that case fill the kettle from a jug. Heating excess water is only going to cost you money.
