B. Elliott made Selecta grinders, which is quite funny as they also made my Samson angle bender. I've got a tonne of the grey paint from that left over, and I'm not sure if I can be bothered buying a whole new tin of paint for the grinder when I've got paint I'm unlikely to use again. What do people think? I'm a bit ocd on these things but I can justify it in my mind because they came from the same works :P

It's a question I ask myself! I like to have the best tools and keep them in proper condition to secure them for the next generation as I'm positive most of what I own will out-live me. I'll think about it tonight...

Original is always nice if you want it to look like new but I normally just paint it what colour I like as it shows a bit of history; been restored and painted etc.

Some photos from tonight. Taken the cowling off on both sides to clean the crap out. It's actually not that bad. The casts are really nice and were apparently painted inside. The paint is lifting really quickly with the paint stripper, far easier to remove than on the angle bender.

I think I'm going to have it in grey

Yes, I'd been looking for a good one for a while - tonnes of GMF ones over here from Australia and new Chinese imports, but occasionally old English ones do turn up. What did you go for in the end, out of interest?

I just have a cheapo for now. I may get an old pedestal one. Coincidentally a mate called me about an old pedestal grinder in superb condition for £300 this arvo. I'll probably pass on it as I don't use the one I have very often and the pedestal one will take up valuable space.

Not much progress to report other than a lot of paint coming off, and my power drill is making a horrible sound, think the bearings have gone which is fair play since it's been used heavily for wire brushing lately. Interestingly I think the machine has been restored before. I found reference marks on the casing and there are two different tones of red coming off, the burgundy you see is really easy compared to the bright scarlet that hardly shifts. Good to know it's been looked after before though, but it does explain why it's in such good nick. Photos tomorrow of painting progress, hope I get some sun to aid the drying!

Been doing some work but not too much. Cleaned up the brass plaque with a track rubber block which is much better than what it looked like before, but it also took the paint from between the letters off

So I decided to paint it back on. Not sure whether I should have buffed it with the Dremel before I did it, does the matte finish look as good as gloss? I also need a finer brush to get in those letters, maybe Tamiya or someone makes them

I think it looks quite nice though. I'm using Humbrol gloss black because tinlets are cheap and all I need quantity wise.

I've had it all in bits but put it back together again, which meant unhooking all the wires and linking them up again. Photos while you work are a God-send, as are coloured sharpies The switch is made by Santon Switchgear. My (bakelite?) switch turner is chipped, so I looked them up on eBay but could only find complete vintage switches, cheapest was going at €55, which is only $5 cheaper than what I paid for the whole machine!
