Cups

Hi all,

I am just after a bit of feedback if possible,

Cups seems to be quite big business at the moment, with everyone wanting the latest and largest pyrex available!

What do you guys look for when expanding your Tig consumables, and do any of you weld with unusual cups day to day?

There are quite a few out on the market, and I just wanted to get an idea of what you lot (the welders) would want to use

I use cheap-ass big gas lenses on the 26 when I want maximum coverage - £20 for a complete set from china... I'm a tightwad.

No 8s, they seem to cover most stuff, standard ceramic ones. I have pyrex cups for use with CK Gas savers, gave up on em as I still touch down and it naffs the mesh in the gas saver, I'm not good enuf for fancy cups, so I get by with standard kit and standard gas lenses.

Like to get me hands an 36B cups when I can.

I only ever use a Pyrex cup if I'm in a position where I cannot see the pool due the the ceramic obscuring my view.
Otherwise I'm quite happy with a standard wp20 ck lens with standard cup. 90% of what I do is with a no7.

Regular stuff is a no.7 or 8 gas lens on a 20 (or a stubby converter on the 26), that covers nearly all the alu, ms and most ss. The big stuff is only for max coverage.

Well you know I use the dogfab / mike furick cups from you guys and thats about as wild as it gets. May get a bbw soon .

Other wise if I'm doing something that I want to try and walk or may get a bit contaminated I use parwed ceramic gas lens #8.

Still prefer normal collet body and #6 for aluminium.

I've ordered a couple of glass slides for a guitar, lets see if I can make a gas lens to match them. handy that they're made from borosilicate glass, which is the stuff normally used for cookware.

Im a beginner at TIG welding, but I do like have a habit of trying to make things rather than buy them

normaly nos 6 to 8 gas lens type for root runs walked in pipe. we use special extended nose on heavy wall then progress up in size depends on the bevel biggest is best 20mm bore fill and cap 3mm filler think pyrex would only blind every one in the area with more radiated light if you cant see into a corner take the tungsten out more never use the parallel type porosity specials we call em

ps lot of dodgy gas lenses on the market now beware all brass type should be copper /brass use the yank stuff if you can its the best same goes for ceramics

Apologies, most used cup for me is No7, I just been doing some practice.
Gas lenses I have are CK, and so are the cups. I will pretty much stick to 7s now, I'll go back to Pyrex when I get better, for any nadgery bits..

Any pics of all that?? I'm a bit lost with all those numbers....and pyrex.....the only thing i know about that is that i have those in my kitchen cupboard.... Sorry to drop in to your thread like this westcoweld but i'm a total noob in TIG welding...

The cup looks funny because its on a gas lens. The tungsten looks thick cos its a 2.4. The torch looks short because I cut the tungsten in half and used a short back cap because there is another bit to go on my practice piece and I would not get in there with Long backpiece.Well, actually I launched the torch against the wall and broke the long back cap after touching down AGAIN. The torch is a No 17, no switch, ie pedal controlled only.
The practice piece is is unknown aluminium grade, the welding is my standard crap grade.
The white border is due to the AC balance busting up the oxide layer on the ali
Its sitting on one of my copper heat sinks, which I now know are not ideal for ali, Stainless is preferred, so I am eyeing up the saucepans in my mates kitchens.
I'm about to go and hit that test piece with my biggest hammer, I'll see if I can set up a pyrex cup torch once I've vented.

I use the CK pyrex because I like them but as Richard said a regular no7 does most jobs

The cups are the pink things-(because TIG is for girls-real men stick weld) anyway, top left-gas lens and No7 cup. Below left, No 17 torch, unswitched, with a stubby (short) pyrex cup set up, a standard length pyres cup just above that.
Torch on right is a Switched No 26.
To confuse things a bit more, if you can zoom in, the pyrex cup is fitted to a CK "gas saver" which is just a mini gas lens.
The idea behind the gas lens is that it diffuses the gas to give better coverage, and you should be able to reduce gas as well, thus economising on gas. In France, gas lenses are in fact called diffusers.
Langy always uses pyrex cups because he dont like to be seen with pink things in his hand.
Have to dash down and get that euro now cos if Skotl n Taitsie spot it they will be on the next Ryanair to snatch it.

Sort of, but they just make it easier to see whats going on, so I suppose they do, they are more fragile than standard though, they are good for blokes like Langy because he cannot always weld at the bench-he has to take the torch to the job, they would be a definite advantage for his work.

I always weld at the bench so regular cups are all I have and use.
