Not sure if half of the features on modern machines are actually needed? But the Hitachi seems to have mixed waveform, and that dates back to 1997!

Depends who is using it. Aerospace guys tend to know what they want and like a set with enough features for them to be able to get what they need from a set. And that was where most of the Panasonic and Hitachi TIGs ended up, in aerospace shops.

Your old castotig had that too which dated back to 1993. I agree there is a lot of nonsense thrown on these units and a good % of it I cannot see the aero space guys using either. The Kempis are probably the worst for filling a panel with pointless tools.

I cut my teeth on a syncrowave 300, no pulse, doing 1.2mm alloy stuff predominantly. Some of the best aluminium work I've done was with a transtig 375.

Id prefer a fixed balance (providing it's fixed some where half decent) and have variable frequency control personally. Rarely do I alter the balance unless I have a manky bit of cracked cast Alu to sort out.

Me too. I'm quite involved with the track bike scene and out of a group of Us I'm the only one with an ACDC Tig so you can imagine I get a few cases and swing arms etc to repair. I sold my last bike last year yet I still get them passed to me when the guys have a spill. If I was to start up plastic welding I don't think I'd need a day job lol.
I hate it haha!

I make it a policy never to weld cracked marine manifolds. Cast iron or racing aluminium. That is a horrible job, clean, clean, more clean, crap burns out from the burning fuel etc. yuk.
Done plenty rudders and some small prop repairs but just one blade corner as it really needs balanced on the high performance chevy and corvette engines i mainly work on.

Took side covers off Hitachi today, and it looks ok inside. Its very well made, and I think there is a possibility of it working. Will leave it to dry out for a couple of days, then fit a plug and hope for the best.

Any machine which has been in storage for any amount of time might be damp internally, so its a good idea to take the sides off check for any moisture, and blow out dust at the same time. No sign of damp, but dried out with warm air anyway, before fitting a plug and trying it. Switches on ok, fans both work, and will check it welds as soon as cooler sorted out, and fitted torch to it.
