Just ran outside to check, they are not holes, just dips in the weld, the one on the actual tower is a in a shadow from a bit of splatter too!

Agree with all that's been said, they look plenty strong enough but by god the ones round the turret are untidy, I'd be ashamed to send the job out looking like that .

I've pointed the guy who made in the direction of this thread hoping he won't take offence to it and possibly get a little advice.

"strong but a bit untidy" is fine by me and I'm still happy with the cage!

How big is he?

Seriously though, just a little care setting up his machine would have probably made all the difference and we'd all be cooing over a nice job rather than picking (minor) faults

I presume that when cages are welded in situ like this that some of the joints can only be welded maybe half or three quarters of the way round, due to no room to get the torch in?

Is this correct and are the joints strong enough like this?

The`ll be welded all the way round. When doing cages you drill holes in the floor of the car first, then put a plate over it but dont weld, then assemble and weld what cage you can, pull the plates out, then drop the cage through the floor so you can get to the top. Bring it back up, stick plates back under, weld plates in, then weld cage to plates. At heast thats the way i know. Someone will probably come along and tell you a proper way of doing it though.

some MIG Welders will re-weld a bad patch with a TIG machine. effectively melting off the old weld and laying a new one down (or relaying the old weld properly) Some of those welds look like fine candidates for that route.

Not me though. i cant bloody afford one Well not a decent one anyway. So I'd better be getting the MIG welds done properly first time then, or its grind grind grind. And I hate grinding down metal at the best of times.

PS: no offense intended but i would not be calling myself professional if my welds were like that. They are very much the weekend welder standard. A decent weekend welder maybe, but still...

PPS: Do roll cages need to be inspected for stock car/bangar racing etc ?
