how do these welds look?

These welds are from the rollcage I just had fitted, by a professional outfit, and am very pleased with.

I'm pretty happy with the welds, however a couple of people on one of the car fourms have expressed concern with them.

God, you still working on that Polo Will, hard to say on the welds to be honest, i would say a few more amps personally. If you want a hand, i`m not a million miles away. You know me anyway, and probably remember my sister Eve from school.

Out of interest, who bend up the cage for you, and whats it made of?

The cage wasnt welded by me, it was built from scratch by Saxon Motorsport in kent, well happy with the service and product!

EDIT: the cage is made from CDS as the regs book states

The profile of the welds look reasonable, so I'd guess roughly the right amps and strong enough. Cosmetically they look a little disappointing especially around that strut tower.

I guess it was welded up in situ which probably accounts for the lack of neatness in places - must be a real pain to move around in there trying to weld the thing up. Access isn't great for the torch in a lot of places there.

im pretty happy with it, im not that petty, but would you be happy with the strength of those welds? (not that you can see a huge ammount!)

Can't see anything that suggests they won't be strong enough even in a less substantial cage (that one looks very belt and braces to me).

Ai, thats the one. I thought you were driving the car at one point, taking it a step further i guess. Why are you caging it may i ask, are you planning on racing, or is it just for show. I don`t know what the regulations are for whatever series your thinking, but when went down to a touring car tean, they were all double welded, effectively rooted with mig, then capped with tig.

Oh, and a question, how did you get to weld the top, did you drop the cage through the floor?

i was driving it, but foobared the 1100cc that was in it, its now got a temporary 1300cc GT engine in.

its going to be a track toy, and if it all works out mabe to some races in it in 2010, after ive done ALOT more work to it!

touring cars, sex generally tbh

ill probably be in touch as i need some bodywork doing and it would be nice to have a hand/instruction!

EDIT: i didnt weld it, it was done in kent, i assume they move it around in the car to gain access before they weld it in properly, i did tell them they could cut the roof out

Not a problem, just PM me whenever needed. Someone else we both know (Jamie McGregor) is in the process of dropping a turbo`d G40 into his, and Matt Morgan, who you also might know, is dropping an audi 1.8t in his, got work on both of those to do in near future.

Ew. The welds around the shock mount are right manky. They won't break though, i'm sure.

Best you can do, buy Saxon a tin of anti spatter spray for Xmas, and give them a card with a picture of that weld on the front!

The strength in something like that is in the design, all it seems pretty well cross braced and the joints would most likely be in compression in the event of a roll, even so its a pretty poor finish for a professional fitting, there's no excuse for leaving spatter, and welding around the turret has a hole in it, I'm sure its strong enough though.
