Megane electrics

stuck in a car park awaiting a tow home at the moment, megane has electronic fault on the dash screen, wipers are in non stop, hazards are on permanently, tach has a mind of its own and the lights are doing the dance of the sugar plum fairy...

Where do I start looking...and don't say eBay for another car...i get the feeling that this is an Ecu problem

water in the fuse box /ecu etc disconnect battery leave a few minutes reconnect it try that
or petrol and a match

Same thing happened to a mates e90. Turns out to be a known issue where the drain next to the ecu blocks up and then the ecu floods and dies. Even though it's was a Beemer the symptoms where ecactly the same.

He needed to source and fit a new ecu that needed to be coded. 2.5k with an Indy doing the work! He sold the car to the Indy as scrap!

Lift the bonnet and take the cover off the engine bay fuse box, disconnect the battery. I reckon there is water in there Try gently drying it out with a hair dryer. Reconnect the battery and test

Got it started and kicked it home with my father following as I have no lights, indicators have a mind of their own, no tach or speedo etc, every wanting light flashing and it jerked and lurched all the way, no brakes (pedal is solid as if car is off), no power steering...and now it's home it won't even think about starting and cheap diagnostics says no stored faults

fuse box in engine bay is bone dry, i actually made a point of sealing it up properly before the mot with a bit of rubber door seal becasue i had been told they suffer with getting damp, there is no sign of any moisture at all in it so i dont think there is going to be any inside the unit. have disconnected the battery but cant see that fixing

remove ecu and try that for water

Meganes are known for poor waterproofing, pretty sure water has got in at something, maybe tracked into ecu.
Rover 75 suffered with this problem due to a blocked ecu compartment drain. Sent everything haywire and car was a no go.
My friend fixed his by removing ecu and drying out in boiler cupboard overnight.
Put it back in and ran fine all electrics back to normal. he was lucky, many need a new ecu

cant afford another car otherwise i would have got one a long time ago.

ecu looks dry too, all connectors are solid, battery is off for half hour to see what that does although im not holding my breath...if it needs a new ecu im going to park it next to the alfa, cover it in panel wash and throw a match at it

I would suggest its a bad earth. Have a look at the earth point near the battery and give it a good clean. Also depening on the year i wounder if it suffers with the same problems as the clio where the drain tubes under the plastic covering below the wipers arms get blocked. If this is the case then remove wiper arms, remove plastic cover which runs the full width of the windscreen and you are probably going to find a swiming pool on each side of the car. Remove drains (usually just rubber pipes) allow water to drain and rinse the pipes through so they run clear with no obstructions. Then refit. U might even find an earth point below there aswell

A bad alternator often causes mad faults check your battery voltage and if you can get it to run the output voltage from the alternator
It won't be the ecu causing hazards or wipers to go daft

The Mrs had the older megan a few years ago and the indicators wipers and dash went bezerk ,Long story short there was a bunch of earths in the scuttle/ drain that had rotted off, I repaired them and it was sorted, took longer to find than sort!

It's well worth an internet search - different makes and models have different common faults. If a late Peugeot 406 were doing that it would probably be a wet and corroded connection under the driver floor carpet causing the CAN bus to short out and making the body control unit go mad.

earth near battery is fine, replaced that about a year ago and it still looks new, didnt know about the scuttle panel earth though, or the drains. its hammering down with rain at the moment and im really not in the mood for this so it is waiting til the morning.

its got half a tank of petrol in it at the moment so should burn nicely...there is also a muppet parked in my space too so i may have to block him in then let the megane burn...

Haha.. Joking aside cars and vans can really **** you off and cause a lot of stress.
Van breakdowns have cost me dearly over the years as I am a mobile engineer and cannot work without it.
Ended up leasing a new one this year after completely losing the plot in the street one day and completely kicking the wing in on the old van in temper.
The Mrs said I was a nut job and wanted to get me locked up in the funny farm as all the neighbours were looking at me in the street..
