Going to put new sills on the midget as its had a patchwork job done over the years. I want to re finish in satin. Professionally I always used satin clear but often wondered exactly how durable polyester base is without the clearcoat. Anybody?

Almost as durable as cellulose primer! You could lacquer with a matting agent added.

BMW finish engine bays, boots and underfloors with it, it's more durable than people give it credit for.

It gets no UV or weather exposure in those locations though.

This was why I was asking. I used to add matting to my clear but then Ford started to leave engine bays and boots in base colour but I never trusted it to find out how durable it was though i often wondered. I'll stick to matting compound.

you are correct no uv but the underside gets just about the worst weather exposure of the whole car and holds up fine for 10 years

Very good point. Not sure i would trust the celly base but poly? Jury's out still I think.

Can you add matting agent to 2k Polyurethane paints? I thought 2k car paints where Polyurethane but Adam at express paints informed me that they’re 2k Acrylic. Polyurethane paint is harder wearing, also more resistant to solvents and chemicals than the Acrylic. I used it on the underside, suspension parts etc. coated over epoxy.

Im talking about polyester base coat not 2k direct gloss. I would put matting compound in my clearcoat which is 2k acrylic.

i wouldnt leave it in basecoat its not durable at all and doesnt really compare to what a factory has used

why not just ask for some matting agent added to the proper stuff...do it right ?

How is the factories polyester base any different to our polyester base then ?

The underside of my Citroen is covered in black stuff (schutz) not unlacquered base coat. What kind of car is yours ?

but from working on cars that are factory the engine bays etc stand up better to solvents and chips than fresh basecoat ive put on

thats my 2p worth , use matted gloss and it will be weather resistant , solvent resisant and stand up will to chipping and general use

edit anything made in the last 25 years will have been water based base too

I personally wouldn't leave basecoat un coated, yes they do leave it uncovered but it's not important to them , once it gets grubby it's a bitch to clean

A very good example of this is a two year old car with 40k on the clock, the bonnet will be peppered with stone chips from the motorway miles the the wheel wells and the buttom of the sills will be fine.

Once you put matting agent in the clear that becomes just as hard to clean as well, the dirt can't tell the difference between the two.

Once you put matting agent in the clear that becomes just as hard to clean as well, the dirt can't tell the difference between the two.

I would completely disagree about mat clear, It just washes off unless your using something different to me ???

I never had problems in the past putting matting in my clear and not being able to clean it to be fair. All I was really interested in at the start of the post was, is it totally necessary to clear and not that I would actually do it. Im now wondering if the "non cleared basecoat" from the factory may actually be tinted epoxy??
