Things that don't want to be anywhere near a press brake

Brackets, cleats, ladder stiles, bending heavy rounds, that sort of thing. We knackered the roller bearings in the press (Should have got some photos of the ones he took out!), so spent a few quid getting it nice again, so don't want to go down that route.
I've looked at buying a smaller press brake reserved for doing this sort of stuff but because they are small, they don't have the tonnage.

What about a big c frame press? Maybe not as versatile though as you'd not make say a box from flat like you could on the horizontal.

I often think a horizontal would be useful to us, but just do all that sort of stuff in the 250ton p/b. With a a bit ingenuity, knock up suitable tooling to do allsorts.
From making chains from 25mm s/s bar, to straightening beams after welding flats on etc.
Obviously for that sort of stuff you dont want a euro tooling.
Oh and it takes up much more space



Horizontal is a faster setup generally, and easy to keep multiple bends in line- but you are limited to doing fairly narrow stuff, you'd be hard pushed doing anything wider than about 150 at its capacity.
Bar bending is a separate machine again really, but where do you stop!




For little light brackets and stuff weve got an old 30tonne Promecam, and a heap of un-cared for tooling.

For this sort of work I used to use a big old Pearson 250ton press the beauty about it was it had a control to adjust the beam so you could purposely bend things more at one side also you weren't bothered about knocking it out of square as you could dial it back in in seconds.

Not like the fancy newfangled up stroking thing the got us in later years.

Yeah, I've been weeing in the breeze again today, loads of prices back for cheapanese junk. Had the same when I was trying to buy a bandsaw. Seriously need to hang on to the good kit as there doesn't seem to be anything of decent quality to replace it with.

The bigger ones have a ram mounted on top of the table which gives you a bend height of around 180-200mm. The under slung rams are around 100-120mm. Just need to watch that the top of the bar doesn't under bend.

Sad the state of the junk that gets passed of as suitable gear. One product sheet said in the small print 'Not suitable for heavy duty fabrication use - suits one man band fabricator'.

Someone mentioned a C frame press, not a bad idea that- Kingsland do hydraulic versions of the old fashioned ones....

Pressbrake is no good - 6m of flat bar stuck up in the air/bar bashing around the back of the machine.

What's a C press then?

Not sure how fine the stroke can be adjusted...

Still got the same problem of the flat going up in the air though.
Put the long bit out the front I Do stuff like ladders on the end of the big one, so theres nothing to hit.

I have a 30 ton mechanical press that is inclinable (you can tilt the top part relative to the base) so in theory you could have a horizontal stroke, never tilted it though as it must weigh close to a ton and with no overhead crane it's a scary prospect.

HSE would have a fit if they saw it in a production environment!

Thats the good thing about horizontal benders that you can accurately inch the tool. Don't know about your press brake but ours is operated by a bar full length of the machine thats either all or nothing. Makes you good at clutch control in the car inching it down and holding it

It's always the same when you want something paticular. You will find one then 3 will turn up around the corner.
