I was told and seen on other forums that glanze stuff was junk. Always go to the local engineers suppliers myself, its a bit more expensive to get the good stuff, but its tougher and it lasts.

Is that stuff Glanze? I didn't study the website beyond catagories?

Where can you buy the carbide blank shape tips to braze on and make your own cutters ?
What is the correct name for these braze on carbide tips ?

I spent over £ 30 on replacement indexable inserts and always seem to end up with them chipping at the cutting point. I also want to make my own rounder tip cutters as well

I can understand inserts are very good for CNC/threading where the tool needs to be exactly positioned, but price seems a bit silly for manual use. I bought a 12mm SCLCR CCMT09 boring bar, insert is tiny!

Ive been using SC drills for quite a while, and easily reground on a diamond wheel. Seems a lot harder to regrind a milling cutter correctly, so I think ideal for repurposing as lathe tool or drill when they get blunt.

Cant see any other solid square lathe bits, but he says other sizes available. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/151730145214

I pretty well exclusively use Indexable lathe tools these days, just very occassionally grind an hss form tool. Got boxes of hss tools but never use them, time to put them on eBay I suppose. Indexable are just so convenient and fairly universal for a wide range of materials when not doing production quantities where getting the last few thousand widgets out of a tip is important.

I used to turn a lot of stainless steel at work, sometimes you'd have a heap of work to get through and compared to hss, the carbide inserts were brilliant, massive cuts, no suds and you'd get days out of them, where as with hss it might last an hour.

I bought a load of inserts and holders for the colchester i have at home, boxes of 10 and i get years out of them, as i can take my time. Each insert has six cutting points, so in reality a box of 10 is really 60.

I made a lot of cutters in the past, I brazed old inserts onto steel. I used to call in and see a mate and I would pocket his damaged inserts,
the milling TP22s were useful. I was using a small boring bar today, it's an old wideline swingarm spindle with a 1/4" carbide burr brazed to it,
must be around 1980 I made it and it's still got life left in it.

Thanks a lot guys .... I've checked out the tungsten bar .. is is easily cut with a stainless steel thin cutting blade ?

I've also found some tungsten inserts on eBay , item # 301745471133 , they are also available on Amazon .... They appear to be from the same guy 7 best of all he has a massive set of ready shaped forms available .

However , I'm not sure if they are brazable items , as they look like compressed granules will you guys please check the item out , any advice still welcome

No if you could cut it with stainless or normal grinder disc, it wouldnt be much good as a tool! but diamond will eat through it easily, and diamond wheels/blades are quite cheap, 5 quid ebay..

Im not sure how solid carbide bar is made (as it does not look sintered?), but inserts and braze-on will almost certainly be sintered powder. Its compressed into a green segment, then either hot press sintered or furnace infiltrated (this is more for diamond tools, infiltrated with brass/bronze). Most are brazed, yes you will be able to braze them. I used to make diamond segments like this.

There are lot of different carbides, doubt unbranded chinese is that great, just like their HSS is soft..

the tipped can be a bit risky rounding off a bit of hex ect...ive learnt the hard way after chipping a couple and now knock the edges off none round stock with a HSS 1st then throw in a tipped tool.

This seller has some cheap new carbides cutters, might be good for lathe tools after some use.. I bought one of these from him last week http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/141786132192 only cobalt, but very sharp.
