Guys just for the record the scimitar is a armoured reconnaissance vehicle not a tank,i know this as i use to drive em,just thought i'd have the chance for a nip pick,lol

I read the first post and skipped to the last. I have a mk7 ex RAC van, full service history and very well looked after on a 57 plate and not one bit of rust on it. It's the 3.3 towing version with the 5 speed box. All the whistles and bells electric pack and the paintwork is unmarked. As long as you maintain the servicing there should be no reason why a transit like this will not last for a long time. Never buy an ex post office van because they have many drivers. The RAC ones are 99% a one owner van so they are looked after. They carry weight well and still bomb along at 70 no problem. £90 fills mine up and I get around 320 miles on a tank

I have a 2010 Renault Trafic, normally pretty loaded with ladders, drills, drums of cable etc. and I get around 640-680 miles on an 80l fill (about £95). Admittedly nearly all my miles are on pretty empty A and B roads but that is a MPG twice as good as yours!

My ex rac mk7 does 420 per tank driven flat out. Got a vantuner map on it too. Your milage per tank seems low but your fully loaded. I looked at 6 before buying mine and I picked the most rust free one but it's now got problems with the underseal.

------ I have 2, a 27ft and 20ft car transporters, 10x7 plant trailer, 25ft caravan,16ft caravan, 10x6-- 4 wheel, 8x4 2wheel (for skip runs), ex traffic light, low lock up box with fitted diesel genny for carring tools, and a motorcycle carrier.oh I forgot------- 45ft fridge box trailor and tractor unit.
So as you can imagine I dont really like towing
. But now got an auto disco ( coz it was cheap) it drinks fuel.
I want my manual back.

When I was an rac contractor the rac ones where waxoiled, I believe from new,
my old 4x4+2, county was, that was ex scotish power like this one,
That was best 4x4 I have ever had, even pulled a broken down volvo f12 with a low loader on and canal boat must have been 35 Ton, from a dead start on the steepest part of the hill around here, The Aston hill up from queensferry
The driver said the lads back at base would not believe him when he tells them he was recovered by a transit.
Its in a sorry state now though I wish I could get a shell to rebuild it.
I did buy a mk5 extra long wheel base to try but it was pipe dream.

Was a 2.0 petrol when I got it !! I put brand new ford 25di turbo in it, and landcruiser front vented discs.

None of the 6 I looked at, or my one that I bought are/were. Mk6 perhaps, but the mk7 ones certainly aren't.

one in Doncaster near me was it county tractors did the 4x4 conversions on them

yep the smilie front ones had indie front sus and broke diffs that is why they stopped converting them , mine is solid beam dana 44 trouble was no power steering untill I fitted a powerbox off minibus/ambulance.
They were based on jeep front axles and jeep transfer box------ so a short prop off the g/b to the separate transfer box.
Also they had a separate rear subframe to space the body up.
