Drain plumbing - what's this called?

This is the down pipe from my garage's gutter;

I have a dehumidifier that I intend to run a permanent drain into, probably using thin pipe (is it ~25mm?).
The downpipe for the garage guttering has this at the bottom, which I'm guessing is a blockage/pokey portal thingy (apologies if I'm blinding you with plumbing science).

Questions;

1. Is it permissible to tap into that connector?
2. If it is, what is the connector's name and is there a generic "that thing to thin pipe" connector that I should be looking for?

It's a rodding hole, used for inspection and poking a rod through when the drain's blocked. You don't want to tap into it.

What you need is a strap boss with the relevant bush (32mm or 40mm) for your waste pipe. If those are too big you can get bosses for overflow pipe, which is ~22mm.

Rather than messing with that, you may do better to just use a strap boss above. Ie one of these -

You need to solvent weld it onto the main pipe, so clean it etc.

You will also want one of these -

Theyre on the same page as the part above, but you need to choose it according to your pipe thickness.



Be aware, however -

I dont know what's happening out of sight in your photo, but the pipe should either be open, or have a trap on the bottom. If its been installed in such a way that its open to the sewer, then you will need a trap on your connecting pipework, least you get gasses comming back up the pipework.

note - the parts ive listed are for 110mm pipe. if yours is thinner, youll obviously want different diameter parts to match

Julian's quite right about the gas potential. However, you say it's connected to the gutter? It could be a soakaway (in which case no issues) or run into the main sewer (more hassle).

Technically it should not be plumbed into the sewer as it's a strict no no regs wise. That said, on older properties it used to be done. It's easy to find out though.

Find nearest manhole that is downstream of the gutter. Open it up and get someone to flush the kludgie or empty a sink full of water. You should see it coming through the drain. If you don't then you ain't got the right drain yet

Once you are sure you have the right drain, open up that inspection hole in your picture. Pour some water down it (a watering can full) and see what happens. If you see it coming through the drain then it's sewer plumbed. If not then it's a soakaway.

You can dye the water with food colouring if you're in a busy area and the drain's being used a lot.

Most Scottish homes use soakaways in my experience.

Nah it's pretty straightforward S, it just looks more work when written down.

Hell even if you have put a trap on there it's child's play. Would take you a morning at very most.

Depending where you live and age of property - surface water drainage (garage) should be separate from foul water (sewers) so gases should not be a problem - you would need to check though as above.
You could also disconnect the garage roof put a shoe on the down pipe and allow water to drain into the natural surroundings connected as above - to be honest with the amount of water we are talking from a dehum I would just allow the drainpipe from the dehum to drain into the soil and just keep and eye it doesn't block with leaves etc. and you would have to cap the old connection - plastic cap and silicone sealant. That way you don't need to touch the existing.

Kludgie, that's one you don't hear very often. Wonder how many people know what it is. I would just tap into the down pipe, it's only water that is getting added

While the concern for gases is strictly true lets look a bit more

Its a gutter down pipe

It is open to atmosphere so if huge amount of gases come up the drain then they will go out the big hole in the top

The dehumidifier will be going down a 12mm hose (at a guess) so the likely hood of dangerous amount of gases coming up it is low

The chances of it being routed without a natural water trap is low, even less if the hose is intentionally ran with a natural water trap


Its a garage

So the most likely bad outcome is the odd smell of fart

Which is a common occurrence in my workshop and that is nothing to do with drains

I think I 'd just fasten the pipe to the outside wall under the soil a meter or so from the building and let it drain.The water from your dehumidifier is distilled water ..use it for your steam iron and top up your car battery.....jeff....

no its not - strap on boss and plumb in whether its on to the main drain or not makes no odds - if you need a hand gimme a phone.

Honestly, just drill a hole in it and poke it in. It's clean water and above ground, it will not trigger the apocalype.

yup it never ceases to amaze me how complicated internet people makes things for the sake of making things complicated.

I'd use a strap on because they are cheap and easy (snigger)
And there's less danger of it falling out and running on the ground, which is presumably the reason to look at this

Well if that is rainwater its 68mm dia there are no strapons for that size.

Rainwater is push fit with no seals and not normally solvent welded "So it is a welding thread"

I'd let it run to ground KISS keep it simple stupid

I only looked at it on my phone, the rodding eye looks 4" but the seal looks 3", either way you can get rainwater straps, and 3,4,5,6" ones (I used them daily refurbing a 16 floor high rise a few years ago) but if its a small pipe their is those ones that you drill a double hole and they have a rubber seal on the back, they work on any size of pipe

Soakaways are simple now, the readymade ones are 600mm from the building and the holes facing away

You're right about making stuff hard without basis, I posted a 3 phase cutout wired as single to show Bigegg, and 2 people questioned how it was single. Well there was only one live coming in, also known as single phase

I ran Aair con unit in the dormers upstairs of my bungalow in the summer all I ran was a 6mm nylon pipe down into the drain and it worked fine, if it is going into the grass dont worry hardly anything comes out in reality. I agree with ^^^
