I foolishly volunteered to change the glow plugs in the inlaws d4d Yaris, what a crap design, the inter cooler dumps all the water / sand and muck that goes through it on top of the head rusting the glow plugs into it.

3 snapped plugs later and the quick job looks like it's going to be a pain in the @&£&!

Looks like I will be making some extended drill bits and guide bushes up

Hey rig pig....I think I need to replace an injector on my wifes d4d (2004)....engine fault is showing No2 cylinder not pulling its weight?? It's blowing lots of black smoke if you really put the pedal down and tickover is rough. Have you any idea what sort of job this is?? I (used) to be pretty good with petrol engines but never dealt with diesel at all....I'm wary of taking it in to a garage and being charged more than the car is worth to fix it!!

The injectors don't look to be too bad to pull, there is a big external clamp so I would think they will come out easy enough, however check the wiring first as the injectors are also in the firing line for all the muck coming through the intercooler, you may just have a corroded plug.

Thanks for the quick response. I have taken off all the plugs and wd40'd them but it made no difference. I would have a go at taking out the injector but I read it is some sort of specialist job telling the ECU what you have done if you actually change the (expensive!!) injector??

Normally I would take the clamp off and start the engine, one plug at a time if possible.
The compression can help loosen them.

but it conjured up visions of injectors firing around the workshop which has made me chuckle

A lot of the more modern diesel engines have the injectors coded to the ecu. You should be able to change it yourself then take it to a garage that can re code the ecu. Don't forget to make a note of all the numbers on the replacement injector and de pressure the fuel rail. Have a ring round local garages and fuel injection specialists, they are usually very helpful and should be able to give you an idea of the cost.

Gerry you need fuel injection specialists not a garage for that kind of work ring one up talk to them
about if they come out ok or seize in head or not coding etc

Yep...you're right...the MOT garage would probably just take it to a specialist and then put their bit on top!! I'll get it MOT'd first then have a ring around...thanks for the heads up :-))

If it's smoking it may not pass an MOT, it will be easier to sort the injectors out if your still road legal.

As said better to sort injector first unless you think the car may fail on lots of other things and may not be worth repairing
4 injectors if needed plus fitting plus coding will be thick end of a £1000

Won't be legal after Monday and she's using it for work at the weekend...if it fails on smoking I have a couple of days to sort it out...hopefully. Nowt else wrong with the car..only done 50K..... but it's not worth a grand for injectors...don't mind one recon injector at £60 plus fitting though!!

Sorry to resurrect this thread...still having problems with the wifes' little 2004 Yaris diesel....and I know little about diesels!

The engine management has said number 2 cylinder was causing problems...mainly very rough idle. Anyway, yesterday I spent a couple of fun hours taking out and replacing number 2 injector...it really didn't want to come out so I fabricated a slide hammer and it was out in 5 seconds ....anyway it didn't work idle was as bad as ever.

I've just put the old injector back and while watching the engine struggling to idle I pulled the vacuum hose off (what I now know is) the EGR valve and voila the idle was perfect!! So, took the valve off and gave it a good clean (wasn't that bad really) put it back and the idle is awful again. So, do I try giving it a longer clean, do I buy a new EGR (it's not an electronic one so £30 secondhand on Ebay) or can I just leave the vacuum pipe off??

Grateful for any advice....

I have a mk2 yaris 1.4 d4d. It has an electronic egr, it stuck open so I just made a blanking plate and ignore the light being on. As yours is vac controlled you could blank it off or block the vac hose. The solenoid may be pulling a vac all the time so would check that, solenoid may be sticking etc

Hi Pondy...when you say solenoid...this is a mechanical EGR no wires to it.....so it will be a diaphragm I presume and it must be sticking...if I get a chance to have the car for a while I'll try soaking it in some oven cleaner....meanwhile at least it's running well.

He's referring to the VSV, (valve) inline of the vacuum hose. Check whether that is constantly receiving power or whether it's jammed open. If the EGR was stuck in one position, removing the hose wouldn't change a thing, so it's not the EGR assembly.

Disabling the EGR by blocking the hose, (a ball bearing in the hose is one simple method), or by fitting a blanking plate on the inlet manifold is no bad thing though. EGR is a god awful thing.

Hi Matt...I stand corrected!! There are two Denso 'solenoids' in the vacuum line..I have no idea what they do? If I take the vacuum pipe of the extreme left 'diesel thingy' the car idles perfectly but is hard to re-start....if I take it off the EGR side perfect idle and it starts OK. I do have a little video but it won't allow me to post an .mp4 what type of video format is acceptable and I'll convert it?
