I used 4043 rods. 110amps in pulse mode with 60amps as the bottom of the pulse. I used 30% on the AC balance.
It was sheared right through the screw hole so I veed it in slightly all the way round then welded it up. Tapped and helicoiled the hole back out.
I shot blasted with aluminium oxide first to clean it up and then wiped with brake cleaner and wire brushed. There was hardly any crap came out.
As you can see where I have ground back for a nice finish the penetration was good and it's nice clean weld.
A bit different from working on new bright metal.

Tell me about it 90% of my home work is involved with this stuff and it's not friendly to introduce an arc too. Not sure you need to be using a pulse with AC though. I can't imagine that's much use. If your using it to control heat I personally would suggest a pedal. Looks a nice repair all the same.
On my thermal Arc, pulse is specifically for heat control and works really well on aluminium. I have nowhere to set up a pedal so have to make do with what I have. I use the pulse and the torch mounted controller.
One day I may attach the pedal but for the moment I have to live with it!

55% DCEN , 80-100hz, 4043 filler current controlled on the pedal Tbh the settings equate to about 20% of the success with something like this. The other 80 is definitely in the prep. Clean aluminium dedicated abrasives, ss brushes, acetone, low preheat and most importantly don't rush. Spend time and effort on the prep work and generally things will go well. Cut corners on the prep work and you could have all the pulses and gismos in the world. They won't help.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I do not think the TA acdc has AC pulse .ive not used one so I could be shot down here but not many machines have this feature and it's not a feature that's explained in the literiture. Dc pulse yes I can see it has that. Are you sure Mr shiney that your not confusing ac pulse with Ac frequency. There is a big difference.
Nope. 100% certain! I use it all the time and it works a treat.

Ac pulse I've used on a couple of machines that have it just to see what the rave was about and personally I'm not a fan but each to there own. It's not a fast pulse like dc can be (or not on the ones I've used any how) id use a pulse on dc applications particularly where distortion and heat control are concerned. Outside corner joint with stainless is a classic joint for pulse to control heat with.
I'm surprised the TA has this and they don't specifically boast it in the literiture. Afaik it's not that common. A couple of the murex machines had it I think which is what I tried it on. Perhaps the modern machines are getting it put in now and perhaps its a better feature nowadays than it was. I'll have to try it again

You could on the old 201s from what I remember you could set your main, background , duty, and hz but the hz limitations On ac pulse made it very slow and Not so much like a pulse but more like a series of tacks. Great if your learning as you could use the pulse intervals as a good note to get filler consistency right but I personally wasn't that impressed. Like I say times have moved on and perhaps modern ac pulse is a lot more useful.
It's a differnt world now. Pulse on my TA gives a lovely stack of dimes effect. I set it quite fast and it gives lovely control. Generally I set the bottom just under half of the top amps for heat and a quick cycle on the hertz. It's a good alternative to a pedal for the type of set up I am using. Don't get me wrong, if I could use the pedal I would use that, but my setup just does not lend itself to using one.
On aluminium it gives a much nicer finish.
