Yeah......heard all that before guys.

Old sailors use to dip their rigging in Linseed oil then hang it up long before stainless stuff came along.
I had galvy chassis in 90's and that method stood them in good stead.

Nothing to do with throw away mentality. As for stealing the Landy, I ain't lost one yet but if they want it they will have it, especially when you have it straight and painted anyway.

If I subscribed to throw away mentality I would would not have run Tax exempt Landy's for years

I have never got all this stuff about painting galvy chassis.
A quick coat of linseed oil is all they need. You will sell the truck long before the chassis gives out. All these expensive and poisonous paints..........after getting it hot dipped? It is overkill.

As someone else said its firstly to detur theives, then as well the galvanising is just a protective coat, it can be scratched off, in fact where they stack them in a rack it got scratched off and rusted on a tiny dot of an area. The paint and the galvanising will make it last many years oh and I don't like the colour of galvanised on green defender

I'm with panting the chassis, first agree the silver shiny finish does not look right, second and really more important, a lowlife will want it more because of the resale value. I hear to often abut Land Rovers especially being taken almost to order, and a lot have a shiny chassis.

Kim I think you are doing a brilliant job and you have shamed me into starting work on my 6x6 range rover (not doing a complete strip down, welding were its needed, and different engine and new colour scheme).

Oh now I'm allot jealous , I want a 6x6, in fact ive been planning it in my head it may be a 6x4 if I can't make a rear transfer box but I want to fit a cummins engine have air assisted brakes and air suspension and if it's a 6x4 I'll put a liftable rear axle or maybe rear steer because I can :P

Paint a chassis black and fool a car thief...........that'll save you insuring it They wont notice your lovely two pack finish on the outside paint work, along with all your other detail.
£100 for the zinc dip and £200 for the toxic paint and a sore head
Protect the outside of chassis with paint? They rot from the inside out

This is true although I wouldn't attempt a 6x6 without a big workshop and there won't be the rush I have now so no big deal taking my time with it.

I'm still painting it, there is no harm in adding an additional coat. And I will be wax oiling the inside.

That's it, cavity wax, I need to buy some, I remember it being mentioned a while ago in the thread.

I've used Bilt Hamber chassis wax, S50 I think it is from memory. Found it really good stuff, as all their products I've used. The aerosols are an expensive way to buy it, but with the 2 foot 'wand' they come supplied with, it's so handy for getting in confined spaces such as the bulkhead double skinned areas. I have found waxoyl a complete waste of time.

We used to paint castings for outside storage with some red Silkolene oil which set to a wax when I worked in a local foundry and I borrowed a 25 litre drum. I used to paint it under all my cars and on repairs, if it was scratched off it would self heal. I never saw it on sale anywhere and ran out a few years ago.

Not the right approach in my way of thinking - do the job right even if it is others in the future that benefit, not yourself directly. Too much stuff these days made with that approach, and is how we've ended up in a 'chuck it out' society.
