No reliability issues so far at all with this
Up to 1k miles now with just 1 indicator bulb needed replacing. (And the 'accident' bit lol)
haha... you just wait.
(latest thing to fail on ours is the passenger door spring - 50p spring, and, im told, half a day to get to it)
...but ours did over 500 miles last week, will do 500 more this weekend, so i guess its not too bad for a 20yr old car : )

I didn't think i could use it more than the 3k miles i have down but turns out I'm still covered third party regardless .
Had I known that before ,would've put it down at 1k .. third party is fine with me, only a 1k car wouldn't really be a point in claiming anything on it if something did happen.

I would imagine that, for a new driver, the no claims bonus from one year would be more than most things that could be damaged on a disco!

At that age and with the value of that vehicle if you have any bumps not involving other people/property and can avoid declaring it to the insurance you'll probably be better off.
Worst case is completely destroying the vehicle (probably you too in a Disco mind...). What you'd get paid out is unlikely to be more than what your premiums would be loaded with for the next 3/5 years. Plus, just think what would then happen if you happened to make a second claim, I'd expect them to really rocket then.

3hrs waiting for recovery off the m25, ill have you know!
The more experienced amongst you will be able to see the fault. I, myself, needed it pointing out to me by someone more familiar with 300tdi service bulletins than me!
With luck it will just be the pushrods. Im glad that every one of them is bent though, as, hopefully, that saved the rest. I wont know till later in the week though.
Meanwhile, im stranded, 250 miles from home...

shaped washer/spacer missing off the crankshaft to hold the belt in place,

you should be ok with just the belt kit you can even straighten the pushrods in a vice or over the bumper with a hammer

Yep, cam kit fitted, according to VIN, but without the service bulletin crank sprocket change. Or somthing like that, anyhow.
Will fit this as soon as Paddocks can get it to me (cam kit with the additional crank sprocket) and a set of pushrods, and then, hopefully, be on my way home.
Thoroughly check the rockers and shaft too - the last one I did had four bent push rods, two snapped rockers and the rear fixing for the rocker shaft had sheared off. The one I did before that had six bent push rods and four snapped rockers, the other four were bent

I have not got a microscope on the rockers (indeed, i have not even cleaned off all the oil) but, from the inspection ive made, i have not seen any issues yet.
A photo, not that you would be able to see much from it -
Ive looked down to the cam follower seats with a torch (cant see the 8th one though, due to body overhand) and the all look the same - no visible damage, splitting etc. but ive been advised that, when the sound pushrods arrive, to put one down, and feel about for any roughness, grittiness etc.
Im guessing that's the best i can do without taking the head off, which i want to avoid.

Six months between recoveries isn't bad for a Disco is it, keeps you in the RAC and AA limit of 3 a year!Anddd there was my first recovery
Overheated and chucked coolant out of the header tank.
And then Diesel line to the fuel pump has a massive leak and has become a waterfall soon as you start the car lol
I have some work to do tomorrow.

I understand that the disco 300 TDI is prone to overheating, as the header isn't really high enough.
If you had not checked the level for a while that may be an issue. The system can get air locked. A good way to check is if the heater blows warm air, as its matrix is in line with the head.
A trick for filling the system -
Loosen the bleed plug on the thermostat housing, and open the header tank.
Cut the bottom off a 2ltr coke bottle, to make a long funnel.
Put.diy funnel in header tank and hold it tight whilst you fill. A little will leak, but not much - the main thing though is it allows you to get the fluid level in the funnel higher than the bleed plug.
So keep filling till you get leakage from the bleed on the thermostat housing, then nip that up and remove coke bottle from header.
Start up (assuming you don't know aomthing else is broke) and idle till the heater gets warm - which means the head is getting cooled (ie the system is working)
Let's hope it's a simple issue, and nothing has gotten melted.

Where is the fuel leak?
The line up from the tank to the lift pump is under negative.pressure, so will suck in air rather than leak out diesel.
After the lift pump, it's only a short line to the filter and then to the IP.
A fairly common failure is for the front seal on the IP to fail, but then you get diesel out of the timing belt housing. The lift pump fails also, but that is much simpler / cheaper.
Oh, and the leak off pipes decay...
I've had all three of the above happen, but no issue with the lines themselves - those hard nylon things seem to be about the most robust thing about the car!

*scratch that its just a 10mm banjo fitting, i was looking for specific lr parts lol)

the viscose fans do fail had it on a few just drill through it put a long self tapper through to lock it up
