I did a lot in Rothmans, as it used to be, on the production floor, usually replacing guards but sometimes designing new ones too. The cellophane for wrapping the packets was delivered in 500dia x 120mm rolls with a 100dia bore. They were liftable by the men, and some of the girls, but when a new lift mechanism was installed which loaded the rolls to about 2m, a new guard was needed.
I was an awkward thing because so much access was also required. A few weeks after fitting, i got a call to say someone had trapped there fingers under a roll as it was deposited onto its' rails.
A lot of head scratching followed. I managed to get my finger into the same position, after much trial and error. Standing with my back to the machine, right arm up, elbow bent, wrist flexed down over the main guard and fingers bent up and slightly sideways.
Some people will do anything to get some pennies. Not gruesome or horrific, just an unfortunate truth.
