Hi guys, What is the thread form like the thread on a metalworkers vice called? and where can I buy a 2 meter length of it about 20mm dia. please. I need load bearing to make a long screw jack, not to lift a vast weight but to tilt a car on a roller

This isn't going to be cheap! What about making a rack and jack setup - replace the length of threaded rod with a bit of box section with a row of holes drilled up it, make two shoes that are a nice sliding fit on the box section, drill them to match the box section (or make them first and use them as a drilling jig for the box) cannibalise an old jack for a screw and nut and fit it between the two shoes. Then with a couple of bolts as load pins you can wind it up and down in a series of steps & positively lock it off as well.

Thanks for the useful info guys,Daniel you under estimate yourself, you must be an expert at something to have found all those, I couldn't, mind you, I wasn't that clear what I was looking for.
RigPig. It's going to be motorised so I don't want to be messing with stopping and moving things.
As far as price goes, that's why I want to build it, the one in the picture, which appears to be the only one available and at the moment they haven't got any, costs £400 so far I have priced the steel I need at under £100 and it looks like the thread will be about £50.

Hi mate, I was looking at some plans for a different kind of lift which had a threaded lift section in each corner and on that they used a thread 20mm thick, for a length like this of 2 meters I would have thought at least that would be safest what do you guys think? and being motor driven a fairly fine pitch would give an easier lift for the motor?
What is the Studding like, would it stand constant up and down use? would it take the load? where do I get it?
Also, I am certainly no expert at this kind of thing I would be grateful if you guys would look at the pictures and give me advice on my choice of box section and what you think the load on that very long jack would be when rolling the car, It's the initial lift from the ground which would be the most, but I gues with the other side on the ground sat on the rollers the load is not that much, so is my choice of a 20mm thread overkill?

I have the Autovip 1700, depending on where you mount the car on mine it sometimes rolls a little too easy! 
If you look here there is a front on photo of mine with the car on so you can see the roll point is near the car centreline so it goes over easily. After using this one and finding some of the limitations I would prefer a spit type but for this job initially there was not enough space. Do you have that basic CJ roller?

I saw that roller when I first decided to buy one Wall. It certainly is better, but I was on a budget and got the basic roller second hand for a couple of hundred. I am using it as we speak, at the moment I am rolling it with a farm Jack and various lengths of 4x4 timber as props for when I have to take the jack out and re possition it or stand it on a pile of blocks to get more height, and it's time consuming and a real pain. I just had to lower the car to undo the nuts at the top of the McPherson strut then roll it again to detach the other end, took half the blasted day
This motorised gizzmo would be much better but I can't pay £400
Ok so getting information from the kindly supplied links I phoned Moor International they said they have a 2 meter trap length for £67 and they do 40mm x 40mm x 40mm square nuts for it which would be ideal for welding into the bit of box section that will be inside running up and down the thread, nuts are expensive though £12.30 each!
Now then how the hell do I cut a slot in the centre for the full length of a 2meter 3mm thick 50 x 50 box section for a piece of 4mm steel to come out from the bit that is running up and down the thread inside the box section so I can attach the car to it?

I meant on the upright in place of the screw jack, I'll sketch it out later and see if it's feasible. Tail lifts use a similar principle using a hydraulic cylinder for lift and the weight to lower, you might be able to use the side off an old tail lift with the fail safe device in place.
