BOC Deal - Weld a Little Save A Lot

Saw leaflet that someone had up loaded on here so decided to look into this a little further.

After almost a whole day chasing my tail and speaking to various people at BOC, THIER agents and theGas and Gear shop in Northampton, I can report that this is correct and a very good deal.

A Y size cylinder of oxygen is £20 and yearly rental is £45, with no collection or other surcharge fees.

Today I finaly opened my BOC account and will be picking up my bottle of oxygen tommorow from the BOC Gas and Gear shop in Northampton for some oxy propane fun this weekend

Anyone wanting to get this deal, I suggest you go directly to the place in Northampton as the chap there was very knowledgeable and helpful. Just need two forms of ID with an address and one must also have a photo.

Various MIG and TIG gases are also included in this deal.

In my opinion this is cheaper than the rent free option as there is no initial outlay on the deposit of the bottle along with the fact that many local suppliers to me won't supply a Y size bottle. They want you to have a smaller 10litre bottle which isnt filled to the same pressure and costs as much as £70.

I think this is a no brainer!

That's fine if you're able/willing to settle for propane as the flammable portion, but isn't there a similar deal for the acetylene; even if it's a smaller cylinder?

Last I heard through the grapevine was that it covered all "welding gases", from Argon/CO2 to Oxy/Acet.

Haven't been to the depot yet to find out though.

Ok just collected the oxy and man in shop confirmed that all shielding gases as well are acetylene are included in the deal. Just paid £20 for a 20 litre gas bottle and a pck of flints for my lighter.

Can't go wrong with that

I got the oxy for a oxy propane set up for general stuff at home. Looks like my torch might not be right so I'm going to try a bottle of acetylene which is also included in the deal

I've just paid £155 (inc £80 deposit) for my 20L argon and there was a letter in the box that said they've changed their deposit system and now, if I don't return it in 12 months they keep %20 of my deposit. If I take longer than 18 months, they keep %50 - 24 months, %70 and 36 months and they will charge me the cost of a new cylinder hopefully this deal is still available in 12 months.

I've just paid £155 (inc £80 deposit) for my 20L argon and there was a letter in the box that said they've changed their deposit system and now, if I don't return it in 12 months they keep %20 of my deposit. If I take longer than 18 months, they keep %50 - 24 months, %70 and 36 months and they will charge me the cost of a new cylinder hopefully this deal is still available in 12 months.

Welding gasses (who I used to swear by). The page says £35 but then there's an £80 deposit (semi returnable, and they only tell you that once you've bought it), £15 shipping and then VAT on everything (even the deposit) at £25. And now I can't afford the metal to build my bench.

Theyre killing their own trade - essentially that rules out the user who has less than one fill per year. If you have more than one fill a year, BOC is cheapest, but otherwise the rent-free would be cheapest... but not with the above "loose your deposit" foolishness.

It works out cheapest to replace it every 18 months, even if it's still half full. With BOC, if you get it refilled before the year is up, do you only pay another £20 for the gas and the rental applies to the new cylinder until the year is up?

^^ Yep, BOC rental is a completely seperate entity to gas so you get one bill a year (or month if paying monthly etc) for the rental and each time you exchange a cylinder you're billed for the gas

When did you take it out, and have you cracked the seals? I'd be looking at whether you can take it back...

They're a business, out to make money like the rest of them. It is a great pity that they haven't made any deals available to the light user until recently - they're probably regretting not doing so now as they've allowed all the other suppliers to get their foot in, and they're trying to play catch-up. Probably a poor business decision, if they'd done a deal earlier everyone would have been happy and there would have been no room for the competition.

I happily use them as they're offering a good deal. I know that there could be a point where all the rent free options dry up and then BOC stick their prices back up to make more money, if that happens I'll go to a cheaper supplier who will again pop up when the demand appears.

Well there seem to be rules on taking stuff back - rights to cancel and all that. Probably only 7 or 14 days to return without getting stung, I'd have a read through the small print of any T&C's.

Hey guys I'm not an expert in anything but my humble caluvulations led m to boc, my stupid estimation suggested that oxy propane would work bu after a few experiments it clearly hasn't so I will get acetylene.

Being at tight **** it has to be the best deal. Under the current offer is have. No hesitation with boc !!

OxyPropane does work, and works well. The only thing you struggle with is the welding aspect of it. There's something to do with the make up of the flame, which I won't go in to here and its already all over the forum and this is a discussion about the BOC deal, which is actually a bloody good deal.


Its a shame they've left it so late to get on the bandwagon, although it should provide some healthy competition..

You don't say what you are using the gas for. Welding with propane is a big no, but it does fine for cutting an heating.
However, you must have the correct two piece nozzles, ordinary acetylene ones don't work right.
And it isn't quite as nice to use as acet and you use more oxygen... but it can be cheaper for some jobs.
