The provisional entitlement only covers you for 50cc or less and limited to 30mph - need a CBT to ride anything with a bit more life in it.

I had to de-restrict a friends 600 Honda and take him to the test centre on it twice so he could do the test again in order to ride it unrestricted. Daft bit was for the offroad test he had to fit L plates to ride from the test centre car park through a gate into where the cones were laid out!

Same as my dad then, the only class they wouldn't give him was HGV1 as he was only on the books as a drivers mate for Shell-Mex tankers but had driven them to give the official driver a break.

Did mine in 2006. It was still easy then. Must get my HGV under my belt before that becomes a routemarch. My car license is only good for 3.5T, very limiting.

when i done my test it was 4 goes round the block . 2 one way and 2 the other 1 emergency stop and 8 questions on the highwaY code and that was it. i missed one turning and went in to an estate 
i flew back as quick as hell and carried onas though nowt had happened the tester said did u miss the turning. err yess 
he said it sounded like it the bike had a megga silencer on it he did pass me mind

Mate was in same situation - rode bike in 70's but didn't bother taking his test. He bought a year old Suzuki 500 and used that to learn on as well as taking his direct access test. Saved him a few quid over using schools hire bike plus he then had a machine straight away he could ride. After a couple of years on the 500 he's now itching for something else just for a change but is otherwise still happy with the 500 he took his test on.

I did mine in 1980. Two laps of a figure of eight course, a few questions and that was it. He even ignored the fact that I nearly ran over a man and his dog crossing the road. Maybe the pass was because I didn't mow him down!

It seems that everyone has a tale to tell about their test back then.
My own is that I blew my engine on the Saturday, with my test first thing Monday morning.
Spent Sunday fitting a spare engine that unfortunately had no kick start.
Told the examiner my tale and he said there was nothing in his rule book about bump starting,
so pushed the bike, jump on the side, lock the back wheel, leg over and away.
I passed.

To be honest, if you can't pass a cbt, you shouldnt be out on the road anyway. The stuff in it is about keeping you alive while you gain more experience. I only know ONE person who's failed his cbt, and he failed 4 times. On the 4th the instructor asked him if he thought that riding a motorcycle was for him, in the nicest possible way...
I have my bike license from before I had car entitlement, but no trainer entitlement on my car license either, it annoys me because I was a week too late passing my car test to get it automatically, spent a while working on class1's + trailers, towed cars on trailers behind lwb van rigs through the periphique at rush hour when the person driving got sick into the journey etc and I own a 2t box trailer, but we've had it downrated to 750 to get around this legally. Its just the way it is though, I have to drive to a centre, hook it up, tow the box round a bit, I'm more nervous of them picking up 25 years of bad driving habits rather than my trailer handling skills. The crammed hire a towing rig and do the test course is about the same as a bike license course costs.
Ironically my wife can drive a 7.5 tonner, tow a large trailer etc. And she is absolutely petrified of the entire concept. She wont even tow the open bike trailer because she can't reverse it and she wouldn't drive a 7.5 ton luton or something either. Just because you appear to have a tick in a box on your license doesn't mean you should.

He ended up having to re-take his test and he spent a week getting lifts to work as he'd have ben up wotsit creek if he'd been pulled or anything had happened whilst riding his bike.
I know another guy who has lost the motorbike entitlement but he's in his 70's and didn't make an issue as he had no intention of ever riding one again. He'd actually been in two minds as to whether to renew it or not and has since sold his car.
I also know a guy who got his license back after renewing it (10 years on a photocard) and gained an unexpected class 1 HGV entitlement. He says he's never even sat in one. Again they wouldn't take his word and change it.
Be warned DVLA are a useless bunch of incompetents and their records are so poor it's laughable. Photocopy your license before you let them get their hands on it because you might well need proof later.

free hgv 1 that's a bonus, only complain if you lose an entitlement

I passed my car full test in 1984. I have never taken any form of motorcycle test as always been into cars. What dan I ride legally with my current full car licence without taking any CBT or test etc.
Only ask as I have recently restored with my brother in law a 1968 Raliegh RM5 Supermatic moped ,49cc 2.75 hp and would like to go to shows on it while he takes his Isseta 300.

Yes ,A mate of mine sent his licence off for a change of address and lost the 7.5 ton part (3 tons in old money) ,they are making it up ...jeff
