One for everyone to be wary of as it's stung a couple of people I know.

One guy who has been riding motorbikes every day for 20+ years moved house and had to send his license away for the address to be changed and for it to be changed to a photo card. It came back without the motorbike entitlement. He phoned up and they said they had no record of it but would add it if he could prove he had passed his test..... How do you prove you've passed your test - yep by producing the license that they have just destroyed. He ended up having to re-take his test and he spent a week getting lifts to work as he'd have ben up wotsit creek if he'd been pulled or anything had happened whilst riding his bike.

I know another guy who has lost the motorbike entitlement but he's in his 70's and didn't make an issue as he had no intention of ever riding one again. He'd actually been in two minds as to whether to renew it or not and has since sold his car.

I also know a guy who got his license back after renewing it (10 years on a photocard) and gained an unexpected class 1 HGV entitlement. He says he's never even sat in one. Again they wouldn't take his word and change it.

Very good advice, I have seen this happen twice now, once with my mates girlfriend who passed her test on the same day as me in 85 and a riding acquaintance more recently.

Ive sent my license in to have the date of birth corrected 9 times, 3 of them when it was still a provisional.
The last time I tried, they told me they could only cancel the license and I could get a new provisional with the correct dates on it and retake all my tests, as the date of birth is coded into my driving license number.
I gave up trying about 10 years ago when told that and when I swapped it for a french license a couple of years back, I just got the french office to fix it which they did within a month.

a lot of this type of thing is down to people that don't know how to amend things and idiots that fail to read things properly I recently had to apply for a permit they took the money and nothing I rang them, they told me they had emailed me for more info read back the email address which was wrong they had used a I instead of a 1 so I complained that they would have had the email bounce back to them so why didn't they contact me by post or phone, never heard a thing but got what I needed

oh aye. I 'lost' mine too. I'd rather pay the £20 extra than take a chance. They have always been like this, a mate of mine sent away his to get his bike license and got it back with car as well and that was over 30 year back. They never corrected it the two subsequent times he really lost his and had to get a duplicate either.

Thanks for all the advice. I am currently trying to get a small bike to learn on. I just missed getting a nice 1979 Suzuki 120, on ebay. It went for £20 more than my max bid. I was gonna bid more but who knows how much the other guy would have bid.

I did my bike test almost a year ago, direct access, as Im 40+...did my cbt day 1 on a crappy chinese 125cc, days 2,3 training on a sv650 tests on 4 day....I cocked up my mod1 test (navigation error ) so lost my cash on mod 2 test....

don't bother with a small bike ,not worth it,do your cbt,if you enjoy it book for direct access training BUT split the mod1 test and Mod 2 test just to be safe....and enjoy it

I bought a 650cc pegasso dual sport to ride last winter,and added a xjr1300 in feb,done 8k on the xjr since feb and I'm away to france in a couple of weeks.....safe to say I'm addicted

My Sister in law sent off her car license for renewal and it came back with a bike license on it, she has never even ridden a push bike and cant even tow a trailer on her licence but can now legally ride a m/cycle !!

that one with the points is more valuable isnt it, if you play your cards right , as was said in the paaaasssst, 'and now friends what do points make'.
Ps you have to at least 60 to know it.

a guy at work lost his licence got a new one asked me to put it in the safe so he didn't lose it meanwhile his own vehicle gets burnt out so he claims of insurance, insurance asked to see his licence, bingo he found his old licence with points right mr numpty that will cost you an extra 90 quid for not declaring the points, new licence in the safe had none on it they had expired just before he lost the licence, then they refused point blank to pay because he had insured it as a 2litre it was a 2.5 and to add insult to injury the pikeys had nicked the burnt out wreck and the insurance company wanted to see it

I knew a girl in the dvla who did that work and she said it was just a button push, or not in some cases , for it to be included or removed !! it was down to the keyboard operator ( abit like my spilling) but as nothing was kept for a long period or the system had crashed and the data was lost.

Ok my nephew who is 17 is wanting to do his CBT and get a bike, he wants to buy him self (on finance) one of those Chinese copy 125 contraptions.

Well to save him wasting the little money he earns himself my brother has asked me to find a bike to give him for his 18th birthday. Which means buy a pice of junk for as little as possible, get it to concourse condition, but I don't mind that too much it's better than trying to fix some Chinese junk every other day for the next 2 year.

Any way he has his provisional licence and going to do his CBT, so am I correct in thinking that he will be able to ride a 125cc bike up to so many horsepower?

What would you recommend? I was thinking along the lines of a honda cb or xl but am open to ideas.

I wouldn't go overboard on doing it up as I can almost guarantee he will come off of it and bend and scrape stuff, especially if he hasn't progressed from a scooter!

He has rode dirt bikes plenty in the past so knows what he's doing, I hope. I mainly want to get him something reliable and above all safe.
