new bike licence ?

Like a dolt, I never bothered to get a bike licence when i was a kid, when i could have passed me test on a 250 and rode anything i wanted after that. So i have to go the long route now. I have had a car licence for over 30 years, which (if i remember correctly) came with some sort of provisional entitlement for a bike. ? I have tried to look on the DVLA website but its all in Greek or something . Apparently bikes are no longer quantified by the cubic capacity, but by their calorific values or amount of carbohydrates it takes to push one up a hill with the brake half on, or something?

Can anyone tell me what cc of bike i can ride with an L plate, or do i have to get a moped? In which case a may well have to give it a miss, methinks. As I refuse to be overtaken by scooter boys on hair driers (sorry but i think its my only prejudice)

This is something I've been looking in to also. I know there are direct access "courses" however, that train and license you for 500cc+

its nightmare to me can't get me ead round it-but I passed me test in 19knife forkn spoon so its not an issue for me but I have sympathy for those who want to get onto 2W. I have heard its due to get more complicated/tougher next year??

The CBT is a doddle mate, i did it a few year back and i had never been on a morobike, even is peeing down rain. I got a V twin 125cc Shadow, loved it, well the bike not riding i did it for 6 months then jacked in, like is ****e at times but i dont want to die by some idiot who cant drive a car, i stayed with a metal box, much safer lol
although do keep thinking on a nice cruiser, a Kawasaki VN...ding dong )))

I remebered leaving it in town while pop shopping, i came back to see 3 blokes stood next to it talking, i got a bit sus, i stood just behind them and listened, i just had to laugh, they were saying what a cracking bike these Harley`s are.

I had to laugh to myself, i jumped on it fired it up and well, it didnt exactly sound like a Harly lol. And to say it has HONDA badges on it and a L plate on

The facts are that a full car licence acts as a full licence for a moped. To ride a motorcycle between 51cc and 125cc, you have to take a very basic test called a CBT. This gives you a two year entitlement to ride. During those two years, you are supposed to take the full bike test. If you haven't, you are able to take the CBT again and extend the L plate entitlemenr. Once you pass your test, you are then restricted to the maximum capacity you are able to ride for a period (I think) of twelve months, maybe more. There are fast track courses that will allow you to skip that intermediate stage.

I was in the same situation, signed up with a good bike school and did the direct access course, day 1 CBT done on a 125, practised on 500cc on day 2 & 3. Day 4 Part 1 in the morning and part 2 in the afternoon (a gamble as you can't do part 2 unless you pass part 1) Now I can ride any bike.

The key to doing it this way is to go with a good bike school as they will get your access to the course dates and times to match your course.

If you've been driving for 30 years then passing your 'big bike' test should be reasonably easy. You have 30 years of learning the road, learning how stupid other motorist can be etc. To pass your test you will just be learning to pass the test as the knowledge you already have is embedded.

I did mine 6 years ago before the two part test was in place I was done and passed in 4 days about 500 quid then. Worth every penny . I've had a few bikes since passing I'm on a zx10r at the moment. I'd recommend it to anyone.

I passed my test in a car 27 years ago and my licence already has bike in the provisional entitlement so no cbt required
