chassis jig...

evening all...
soon i will be making a jig for my pro street 100e...the thing is i am a bit unsure of what material to use...i not really keen on using i beam or channel...so i was thinking box section...4x2 or 4x4 with 3mm wall...would this be adequate enough with a 3mm wall thckness...i have the plan/design.....have looked on internet and so many different designs made of different materials.....

I depends what material your making the chassis out of as the jig needs to be much stronger than the chassis, otherwise the jig will distort with the chassis.

No stiffness between sides other than X beams, levelers with plates so as to bolt to floor ?

On something like a 100E you could use 80mm x 40mm for the chassis and save some weight, For the jig I would go with 100mm x 100mm x 5mm, you will be surprised how much it can pull once to get welding

Sounds good...100x100 would be my preferred method...i will be using an Chris Alston eleminator11 rear clip four link that's 3x2.....plus when finished it will run a small ford until i go cubes and a 427plus will eventually take its place...3x2 with a full cage should take all i can throw at it....a long way to go as it will be built on my drive..will be measuring up soon to see if i can get away with running 15x15s on the rear.....

Heres the jig i use for the chassis's i work on,
This ones a 1962 Corvette frame i did a while back,

The jig is made from 80x80x3mm box section with adjustable screw jack feet for levelling.

thanks for the pic....a nice jig on a flat surface...unfortunately its the front drive for me...but will make the best of what i have ..mine will be lower as i will have to mount the body over the jig....

The same jig will work several inches off the floor and can be easier to work with if you set the body and chassis at the final ride height as it can save time on calculations on stuff like ground clearance.

cool...sounds good and i cant wait to make a start...a question..i am building my car mainly for drag racing but it will be street legal..i was looking at what is the best front strut i can use .strange engineering..or the varistrut system by chris alstons..the varistrut are race spec...can race spec be used in a street strip car that will not see much street....

I've been down the road you're going down a long time back with a 105e anglia (similar size)
Mine also had 15x15s with 18.50 x 31" tyres so you're gonna go through the same packaging issues,

I ran capri based front struts but strange struts would have been better as the hubs fit tighter to the leg and so the strut tops have wider apart mounting points, handy on a narrow car,

Strange struts are perfectly streetable, a friend of mine has run them for thousands of miles without any problems,
cant comment on the Alstons as i dont know anyone using them.

awesome....i have just been on vari strut site..they are for tube chassis only...but the strange aluminium gt strut is for both...so it will be the strange strut package i think.....it gets difficult with parts sometimes as there is a fine line between drag and street/strip...but some of the street cars run quicker than drag only cars...this is my first build so am planning everything i can before i start....i will probably be asking you more questions from time to time if you dont mind....many thanks.....spencer

Driveway builds are cool mate, I just finished this on my drive.
Oh by the way I'm a Strange engineering dealer too. I would stick with the strange struts, like chevy2 I don't know of anyone using the Alston struts

awesome build there mate....building on the drive is all part of the fun lol...i will stick with the strange struts as they are well proven....plus i like the look of the struts and rack and pinon.....

I can get Strange Engineering parts in around 7 days at a pound per dollar rate which includes air freight, dutys, vat etc

Yeah no probs, I run a Hotrod/Speedshop in Watford and supply parts and build cars, Chevy2 is a mate of mine, knows his stuff too
