A Little Pot Boiler

I put up some sketches a while back of my early stove efforts. Well, I it was 'mentioned' that the dining room/stair area was a bit chilly and we are having eight over on Tuesday for eats.
Taking the hint..... I got busy.

First photo is the basic box. 4mm steel with the door frame in 8 x 40mm flat.
Next is the top baffle with the secondary air inlet welded to it. The tube exits at the back via that square hole.
Baffle fitted.
Followed by the convection tubes in 43mm tube.
Top baffle. It had to be in sections due to the taper of the sides.

Today I will finish the door, add some feet, the top plate & flue collar.... and tidy up...

Shouldn't the convection tubes be on an angle to promote air movement, sorry not here to pee on your fire

There will be a duct cover on the back to promote flow. Might add a fan too.

Looks good, can you get between the baffles to remove soot / ash? I've got a commercial stove which looks similar and the baffles are removable, it's surprising how much crud builds up

Pulling the flue off will give some access and I might add an inspection hatch below the tubes at the front, then brush it down to the firebox. The flue is a bit tricky as it goes through a thick wall. I will put a pic up of the installation later.

How about adding a box to the back to draw air right up the back before it goes through the tubes? a google image search for burley stove has a few drawings showing what I mean

That was what I was talking about. An open bottom box covering the rear, so the heat from the back plate will accelerate the air up to the tubes.
The fire is in place, after some hassle due to flue elbows. I had to make a special elbow for the exit. Much-cursing-in-the-marshes... Pix tomorrow..

Put it in place and lit it a few minutes ago. You can see how the flue is awkward. The little box on the top is to get a right angle without gaining any more height. Even so, the flue is slightly down hill before it reaches the wall, and the wall is over 60cm thick before it gets to the vertical chimney.
Yet to put the cowl thingy on the back, but might find a minute to do that and paint it.

Ooohhhhh not good, the chimney should never go dead level or downhill, I'm sure you know this but soot build up can be fatal.........

Personally I would be trimming the legs to get the flue at least horizontal otherwise you are asking for trouble.

Can't you take an inch off the bottom of the right angle box to level it up? Once it's at full heat it will probably work fine but I can see problems when its cold getting it to draw?

Actually it draws from cold. We have only used it a few times and one of the 'summer' jobs is to run the flue through the wall a metre above it with some slope and then across to the original stack higher up. The wall is stone and a bit of a pain to make holes in, but I can do it more easily from the other side, which is my main workshop.

ha ha nice one-if some of the doom n gloom chaps saw our wiring/plumbing/electrical sockets in the bathroom etc etc, not to mention boiler positions over here they'd die of fright-living in France is not for the fainthearted.Re the soot buildup-my burner flue was recently swept after 10+years and produced about a pint glass of soot-actually more like dust.
Nice job-enjoy your burner-I might steal some ideas off you at a later date. But wots this about painting it? -your job is done-it wants polishing by her indoors and blackleading each day in time for you to put your feet up in front of it with a glass or two of tipple.

I don't think they're being doom and gloom types as such. It's merely basic common sense. That's a tar and moisture trap, simple as, and a few minor design changes would make that problem nonexistent. We ain't all girls blouses, regardless of what the H&S brigade try to ram down our throats. I'll bet most of us ignore half their drivel daily and do as we see fit using nothing more tha common sense, but that design really ain't common sense, or even logical. No disrespect Kemppi, but that is slightly lackadaisical design.
