I disagree. They looked at the CB 175 and thought "how can we make this less interesting?" They started by somehow extracting all the pep from the engine and then went to work on the rest of it. They made a damn good job of it too, possibly the most beige motorcycle ever made! (But definitely still worth restoring :-) )

I disagree with your disagree, The CD185 and 200 were beiger than beige on a beige day! The CD175 was a long distance touring upgrade for the C90 owner.

Honda Owners Club West Surrey Branch run mid 70's, I think this was Duncan the Club photographer on his CD175.

Splendid! And with green shield stamps! I'd never considered the cd175 as a c90 upgrade, it makes perfect sense. What's the bike on the far right, is that one of the first cb750's? They were a bit special :-)

The CB400 and the 400/4 were not in production when that photo was taken!

If you mean date wise I said mid 70's as it could be 1974 but more likely 1975 and it is a CD175, he had to lay flat on the tank and thrash the knackers off it to keep up on the motorway!

The cb750 was the bike that finally killed the british bike industry off in the late 60's. I know triumph and norton continued for a good while, but they were shadows of their former selfs.

I remember the first time I saw one of those 750's. Never mind all the patriotic I'll never buy jap it's rubbish malarkey, it was just jaw droppingly gorgeous and I dreamed of owning one!

I'll start a new thread, but my initial question is that I want to fit a smaller rim so that I can fit a tyre with a much larger sidewall. Do I just buy a smaller rim with the same spoke count and smaller spokes or is there more to it?

find your desired tyre and ask these guys- http://www.hagon-shocks.co.uk/common/pdf/wheels2011.pdf I'm guessing you want the fat tyred bobber look, if you are keeping to the stock tyre size overall you will have no gearing/speedo issues.Fatter tyres slow the steering down but I never find that a big deal (unless you are fitting the big fat rear tyres-but that bike won't have the frame or oomph in the motor to turn a fatty rear!)

Ahh, I think I see what happened and where I got lost, sorry, my fault. It was this bike in the photo and that's me on it. We still have it and one day I will recreate that photo as I own the house now.

That's a great photo... Every young lad's dream!

I can remember being similarly transfixed by the CB750 in the late 60s/early 70s; so much so that when it came to the present list for my (short-lived) wedding in 1970, I put down 'Honda CB750'.

Didn't get one, though...

i was hoping to to go for something like this, but am now wondering if the bike is too good to chop up as it really is solid.
might put it all together, clean the tank, start it up and sell it as a barn find.

that would be loads of fun on a wet roundabout very similar to a build a bloke called Sparko (if I remember right) did-apparently he did not hang about when riding it either (I saw it an article in Back Street Heros).The rolling resistance of those boots might be a tad tough for the little motor on the Honda but build your dream and have fun-if it does not work too well change stuff.
You could consider the flat track look-makes for a minimal bike which should be fun to chuck around if you like the look

I've decided the CD 175 is way too solid to chop and am going to sell it on.

Currently sat in a mates shed is my Fathers Nimbus, I can hear him turning in his grave. Maybe I should build the Wooller engine special he started collecting parts for with a flat steel hardtail frame. Link.
