Take a close look at the front wheel the spokes are all bent in the middle - on purpose I will add because it was designed as a sidecar machine it was built like that to allow the wheel to flex under the extra side loads on the side of the wheel.

I wondered if you would comment on the spokes! Drove my Father mad deciding what to do about them so he made a jig and bent new ones, I probably still have it somewhere.

I have only built one Nimbus wheel and on first look we though it was a bodge until we looked into it. I think we used the jig for making Z spokes for that job. But I have used the idea to make things fit that reallly should not and to sort out cheapo mini bike wheels and make them do up properly.

I've been thinking about the spokes since your post and all I can remember is something to do with Dunlop rims and the spokes that were on the original wheels being cranked. I don't remember anything about them being for sidecar use other than the bike has the gearing so you may have solved a 40 year puzzle! I was just starting junior school when he bought this bike as a box of bits and I was 17 when he finished the rebuild in 1982 so it's a long time ago and I have just been searching for the name of a shop we used to go to in Surbiton, J.E. Nunn Ltd. who may have supplied the spokes.

I just realised I think I have seen a Nimbus running, we were on out way to a biker wedding -bloke married his bike as he was riding it more than his..........................-I'll leave that bit out as its a family forum-anyway, this bloke was passing and pulled in for a chat, the bike was a rat -I was entranced by the external valve gear to notice much else,but having seen that picture I think it was a Nimbus.
Have not looked the bike up-but assume it was total loss oil system??

I'm not sure but I seem to remember something about manifold vacuum being used to reduce oil leaks and greasing the tappets.

I treated myself to a magazine in the newsagents the other day called barnetts bikecraft, because it had a pretty trick triumph (meriden) bonneville on the cover. As a magazine its like an american back street heros. But there is a write up on a nimbus in this edition.

Maybe it's time to sell the old mans Nimbus, I would like to ride it at least once though.
