I have rebuilt a pickup truck and will do an engine transfer with stand alone ecu but know nothing about motorcycles. I have acquired a great condition Honda CD 175 and have some plans but need advice. Can someone please suggest a forum like this one where I can ask daft questions and get good answers.

i would think this would be the best forum, plenty of bikers, fabricators, welders, engineers, fitters, mechanics and more petrol heads than you can shake a con rod at. Ask a question and it shall be answered by someone who genuinely knows what they are talking about and no one will mock you for asking 'daft' questions unlike many other forums ive been on

The cd's were a popular little bike, but weren't the most complicated machine ever, and i am sure there isn't much the lads on here couldn't help with. In the college i did a course at , a member of staff had a cd 175, it was the rustiest thing i have ever seen on wheels, and that includes the old datsuns ! I don't know how it didn't collapse into a bucket full of red dust.

They were the "poor mans" version of the CB175 no frills motorbikes.

When I did my C&G in Motor Vehicles there was a fellow mature student (although he was a fair bit more mature than me, in the cheese and wine sense at least ) who used to turn up on a CD185 'Benly' (though it may have been a 200, time dulls the memory), complete with leg shields, topbox and huge bar muffs. He wore a p155-pot lid in all weathers and sported a waxed greatcoat like something a WW2 despatch rider might have worn.

Speaking of Datsuns, my dad (who was self-employed for about a dozen years repairing most of the heaps that the Brit car industry churned out in the 50s-70s) once had a Datsun estate in for some front suspension work: he left it on axle stands overnight and when he got in the next morning the chassis rails had both snapped just in front of the firewall.

They did improve as time passed , but i remember most of the early 80's datsuns, cherrys etc and the rust used to be dripping out of them, them and alfa's , you couldn't stop them rusting.

The CD 175 I picked up on a 73 and has been in dry storage for the last 15 years! I managed to completely strip the bike in about 2 hours.

I'll start a new thread, but my initial question is that I want to fit a smaller rim so that I can fit a tyre with a much larger sidewall. Do I just buy a smaller rim with the same spoke count and smaller spokes or is there more to it?

Is it a sloper or the later underslung frame model ? My first bike was a 1968 CD175 sloper, brilliant bike after riding Lambrettas for years. the hondatwins site above is good for reference.

I've got a RD350ypvs roller sitting in the corner of the workshop for the last three or four years waiting for some attention.It's not a Honda but it's a twin so I guess that counts...

The classic bike magazine used to have a great forum years ago , but it went downhill for some reason and never came back to its former glory. One problem is though , a lot of classic forums , britbike, the jockey journal etc, won't allow discussion of jap machinery, just british european and american.

XL125S was my first bike back in 1985 / 86, great fun especially as we had a good four or five inches of snow in London that winter. Playing in the snow I must have fallen off a dozen times, all at low speed , almost no harm done to me or the bike and I learned a lot about riding in snow and ice very quickly.
Back to topic.
A friend of a friend had a CB200 around the same time, he was of the 'paint it black and call it a caf racer' school. It was called 'the Black Vegetable', he went all over the UK on it for years (10+) until IIRC it was replaced with a BMW, great little bikes they do go on forever with a bit of work.

Put it on eBay with 'barn find' in the title, that'll double it's value right away!

Not Interested in selling it tbh. I'd rather chop and change it into something I like. It's stupidly basic so all I need to sort is the styling. Plus it seems a nice easy bike to learn on.

I disagree. They looked at the CB 175 and thought "how can we make this less interesting?" They started by somehow extracting all the pep from the engine and then went to work on the rest of it. They made a damn good job of it too, possibly the most beige motorcycle ever made! (But definitely still worth restoring :-) )
