My old fella smoked for 37 years but he gave up instantly when he had a heart attack, aged 51.
He lasted 17 years before another attack got him; he'd been dead a while before I wondered why, in all those 17 years, did nobody ever suggest he could be a candidate for a heart transplant...

only 40 i was on 60 and jacked in . never put an ounce on .tryed a bit of blow since just a couple though for research of course

Smoked Cigs from an early age, (12ish) until I was 26. At that point I was burning well over 30 a day. I tended to stop when I had a cold as they tasted horrid. So after a really bad cold I've never picked up another one.

As for what it can cause my Father in law never smoked yet died a horrendous death from lung cancer, wasn't one for going out so never really came into contact with other smokers. Go figure!


At the end something is going to get you be it the Number 10 bus, or an Embassy Number 1 fag. There's one thing for sure, the sooner I go the less jobs I will have to finish

work, works canteen buses, all sorts of places in the past to inhale 2nd hand smoke, I suspect some of us are more tolerable and other succumb to it, the powers that be are trying to stop people smoking and will lose massive revenue in the process, but will save more not having to treat smoking related illness

Well yeah, years ago when just about everybody smoked the revenue came to more than the healthcare burden. Nowadays it's the other way round so smoking's a bad thing.

Can't say I disagree with that mind. My mum had a collapsed lung from heavy smoking, my dad died of a smoking-related cancer and my Grandad had a smoking-related disease (diabetis).

True, in his case it was his doctor telling him aged 65 to give up smoking or be dead within a fortnight (he was at death's door with bronchule pneumonia at the time). He gave up a 50 year habit there and then and started eating Mintoes by the bagful. 2 years later he was diabetic.

Well I got to say I have had a good run on the fags 45yr and as of today its been 1yr 2 days since I had my last fag , decided I couldn't justify the rising cost of smoking any longer , now on the other hand I have noticed the benefits of quitting , feel better in general and can breath better, sense of smell is miles better but the negative on that one is if someone farts it now smells twice as bad , couldn't say I am any better off in the pocket as it gets spent on other things , but hay oh , will I live any longer for not smoking ? who knows.

What about older blokes? Personally, I'll be damned if I'm going to stop smoking. Btw, there are more things than just cigarettes to smoke, you know, and I ain't referring to the illegal stuff. If someone wants to smoke, that's their choice, same as if someone chooses to drink alcohol. How much would an alcoholic, (that includes anyone who drinks alcohol frequently), save if they stopped drinking?

Not being pissy, but by eck, if you decided to stop smoking and did so, all well and good. Don't try to suggest others should though. That was your choice, not someone elses.




I've known a good few people who've never touched one in their life and have died of cancer. We all die eventually, simple as.

One thing I can guarantee is that when I go to my grave, I'll be power sliding up to it on my **** and not walking up to it in the boring, healthy manner which means I didn't do what I enjoyed in life.

Doubt it. I stopped November last year and could have easily continued down the non smoking path if I'd chosen. Simply didn't want to. I actually like to sit down with a cuppa and smoke. Sitting down with nowt to do, however, bored me sh*tless.

This is why reformed smokers and never smoked types tend to grip my sh*t when they start on about people smoking. Just because someone chooses either never to smoke else to stop smoking, they cannot appreciate that not everyone shares their opinion, perish the thought.

Good luck with not smoking yourself, but seriously, some of do actually choose to smoke for enjoyment alone. That's our right the same as that of everyone else.

to get back to my original observation ,what the f**k causes this ,surely if its a rollie there wouldn't be nicotine present,any chemical engineers here done any experiments/research,is it something in the fag paper?

That's what I thought at post 1, years ago I used to work with a fitter who put teabags in his toolboxes to keep stuff from rusting, same idea I reckon, never short of a cuppa either.
