this is a puzzle ;length of new steel been in yard 4 weeks went to move it thurs' saw a discarded roll up end, that had significantly reduced rust formation compared to elsewhere ,also being a typically damp day the area around the 'rollie' was dry much to my amazement?? good reason not to smoke number 33 me thinks.

only 40 i was on 60 and jacked in . never put an ounce on .tryed a bit of blow since just a couple though for research of course

My old fella smoked for 37 years but he gave up instantly when he had a heart attack, aged 51.
He lasted 17 years before another attack got him; he'd been dead a while before I wondered why, in all those 17 years, did nobody ever suggest he could be a candidate for a heart transplant...

I think people have to have a very short life expectancy to be put forward after their heart attack and as he survived for another 17 years I doubt they had him in that category, more or less same with my old man slight stroke about 37 gave up smoking continued to work, heart attack about 48 and lived a further 13 years until a bleed on the brain got him, which looked like the warfarin caused as the hospital failed to give him a blood test for the drugs level, which was found to be to high.

We all like to think that we're Special Snowflakes and "it won't happen to us."

Last year a close friend of my wife stopped by with her hubby who I'd met before on a few occasions. A big guy. He complained of feeling unwell, but that his x-ray was clear. He patted his chest and said that although he smoked all his days his lungs were fine. To cut a long story short, a scan revealed cancer high up in his lungs that the x-ray missed. Within a couple of months we were at his funeral. Not a Special Snowflake.

What about older blokes? Personally, I'll be damned if I'm going to stop smoking. Btw, there are more things than just cigarettes to smoke, you know, and I ain't referring to the illegal stuff. If someone wants to smoke, that's their choice, same as if someone chooses to drink alcohol. How much would an alcoholic, (that includes anyone who drinks alcohol frequently), save if they stopped drinking?

Not being pissy, but by eck, if you decided to stop smoking and did so, all well and good. Don't try to suggest others should though. That was your choice, not someone elses.

I've known a good few people who've never touched one in their life and have died of cancer. We all die eventually, simple as.

One thing I can guarantee is that when I go to my grave, I'll be power sliding up to it on my **** and not walking up to it in the boring, healthy manner which means I didn't do what I enjoyed in life.

My late father-in-law was a heavy smoker from age 12 to 71 when he was diagnosed with lung cancer and had a lung removed. After recovery he continued playing golf 2-3 times a week and obviously never smoke again. He died just before his 85th birthday due to an infection caught whilst in hospital for tests after a suspected heart attack !
I don't smoke, don't drink (100% tea total since 1988), vegi since birth and used to be fit yet am in poor health.
I think moral of story is eat, drink and be merry in moderation as you have only have one life and should enjoy it. I'm not advocating any one smokes but it's their choice and know the risks involved.

i smoked 60 a day for over 13 years.i smoked 20 between 8 am and 12 noon. the reason for stopping was i went an hour without one and thought that was a record so i stopped

My old man smoked 60 a day while in the RAF in '40 (fags were dirt cheap at the NAFFI). Decided it was bad, so quit. Really difficult as every night in the mess was like being behind a RN smoke screen. He used to dream of smoking... After around 3 weeks, he was OK, and never touched one again. Had a heart attack ( I diagnosed it) at 52, but managed to be fine until another one at 72. I miss him. But I also think diet has a big influence, we are much better informed now.

To add: I did the usual teen stuff, smoked a (very) few, decided it wasn't for me, tried a few joints, ditto. So stuck to the good old vinho ever since, at least it is legal. ( I was warned that Herts finest had me on their search list due to some of my aquaintences..)

Smoked Cigs from an early age, (12ish) until I was 26. At that point I was burning well over 30 a day. I tended to stop when I had a cold as they tasted horrid. So after a really bad cold I've never picked up another one.

As for what it can cause my Father in law never smoked yet died a horrendous death from lung cancer, wasn't one for going out so never really came into contact with other smokers. Go figure!


At the end something is going to get you be it the Number 10 bus, or an Embassy Number 1 fag. There's one thing for sure, the sooner I go the less jobs I will have to finish
