Look what the Pennine climate did to my tools!

20m x 6m is quite a large space for a single dehumidifier so it will take a while to bring the humidity levels down. Also, if there's any carboard or wood stored in the place, that will act as a buffer and it will take a while to decrease it's moisture content. Has the floor been laid with a damp proof membrane underneath?

I try and keep my area below 70% relative humidity, which seems to do the trick.

There's a little bit of cardboard and wood, not a lot, the humidity is down to about 80% now. The humidifier stopped in the early hours because of a full tank, I'll get the drain working for hopefully this evening. My neighbour wants me to help him move his young bulls down from the fields and also look at some possible repairs to his snow plough and I have 70 litres of beer to either bottle or dump so may get sidetracked.

The concrete floor has a 3m damp proof membrane Its poured in to Kingspan metaldeck above the downstairs barn so shouldn't be much moisture tracking upwards through that.

Most machinary now de-rusted and covered in various stuff. Still got some other tools to sort out in the coming days and a large lump of steel to source for coatings testing.

Make sure you seal up any unused doors and windows, and any other sources of draught. If there's no air movement through the space moisture won't be carried in.

I've been round any suspect gaps with a can of cowboy foam and I think I've got most of 'em

Well, apart from polishing off rust and applying stuff to stop rusting, I had a quite productive day.

• Took the castors off the M1 and put on the proper feet.
• Herded some young bulls down from the upper pastures down to my mates field ready to take to market
• Welded in some new bushes on his tractor's front loader
• Welded a snow plough (well, a glorified yard scraper) to a quick release bracket for the front loader. First time I've had the Portamig at full power
• Humidity in the barn is still coming down, now about 76%
• And the important bit, kegged 60 litres and bottled 12 litres of beer

I've now got a nice pint of home brew. Not a bad day at all

No worries Dave, it has cleared, just took longer and it smells and tastes fine so I bottled it. I left it in the fermentation vessel a lot longer than I usually do but I think I have got away with it, we'll find out for definite in about 3 weeks......

Yikes Brew, that rust makes me glad I have a pretty dry workshop! I had my little M10 Lathe in the shed and it started going but not as bad as that, so I have now siddled it into the workshop next to the mill
