I may be imagining this, but wasn't there a distributor that you could adjust the dwell with the engine running? Maybe late 80's early 90's

I seem to remember Rover V8's (P5B/P6) having an adjustment on the side of the distributor, although I fitted a lot of Lumenition Electronic Ignition Kits around that time....a long long time ago...

I still have one sat on the shelf with Lumenition fitted, replaced the hopeless Opus setup with it. I'm keeping it for the day when (if!) we eventually fire up the 5 litre Manta and it has no spark......

I also have a Colortune and the Gunson timing light!

the old Lucas distributors used to to have a knurled wheel on the opposite end of the vacuum advance to adjust the timing with the engine running
most people just used loosened off the dizzy clamp to adjust much easier
i still have an electronic add on for points it had the fail safe of still being able to flick a switch to go back to normal points

Fiat uno you could adjust it with an allen key if I remember correctly.

I've seen a transparent distrbutor cap.

But did you see through it?

I had a colourtune years ago but nowadays I use a wideband o2 meter. It's a lot easier to use.

got my hands on one and tried it ...seems to show blue pretty much anytime the engine is running , you can wind the mixture in/out so far its almost dying before it starts to change colour

so not much use

Last time I used mine was with 4 star fuel and that would burn yellow! Not tried it on unleaded or even considered tuning the lawn mower and didn't think to use it on the Polo we fitted a 32/36 DGV to.

I still have one but not used in a while, comes in handy on my old mini along with the carbalancer also gunsons, the old cars were so simple to work on but needed tinkering a lot to keep running hence these tools, new cars just need a code reader and basic knowledge.

Yep lol, and I noticed from a different post that I'm a year older than you, 60 a day was heavy going, more like 30 a day for me. Miss the old Embassy with the coupens, now on roll ups.

I've got three of these, looking at car boot sales to find another as my last two were £1 each from that kind of source. I've got twin DHLAs on the engine, so you set the idle mixture individually for each cylinder, and it would be handy to do them all in one go. As the spark plugs are between the exhaust manifold tubes (Vauxhall slant four) it makes it a long job as you have to wait for it to cool down a little before you can remove it and move to another cylinder, hence wanting a fourth so I can have them all in place at the same time. Then perhaps a set of four mini-USB cameras to stick down each tube, so I don't have to try to get at the correct angle to see down the tubes.

My next mod (well, next time the car isn't running right) is to replace the plastic tubes with some copper heating pipe. The trouble with the plastic is that it doesn't hold together all that well, and if it drops off the plug end piece it lands on said exhaust manifold, and that's the end of it.
