pretty much fool proof to use and perfect flares everytime , no nasty teeth marks in the pipes or crooked ends

theyre about £35 on ebay

can get a pic of a end if you like..will be doing some today

That is the same tool as mine although mine has the "Franklin" brand on it. Works just fine, makes perfect flares every time.

SnapOn do exactly the same tool with their BluePoint label. It is a one trick pony though 3/16 SAE brake pipes only (not metric), look elsewhere if you want to do fuel lines or anything else.

Well thankfully it is only the brake lines that need proper flares, the fuel lines just need a small swage to stop the rubber hoses popping off.

I found my old Moprod flaring tool in the shed and after I found some instructions on t'interweb (I had forgotten how it works) it makes immaculate flares in Kunifer pipe with a bit of brake grease applied to the die.

That one Steve uses is just a modern version of the old Moprod one by the look of it, Them old Moprod tools were good units.

As for Practical Classics I wouldn't take to much notice of anything they say, amateurs at best !!!

ive also got a sykesp flaremaster 2. far superior to any other tool ive tryed but it was around £100

I can't seem to get perfect flares with mine on cunifer, it says not to compress the O-ring but if I dont then it just looks like a mess?

I have my dad's old Moprod one as well, it really needs clamping in a vice when doing Cunifer though as I find the handle is a bit short.

I've got a Moprod tool as well. Bought it new 30+ years ago. It's the second one I've had as the first, again bought new, in 1970's stripped it's thread. The first had the thread as part of the two halves that hold the pipe whereas the later, which I still got, has a separate nut. Never had a problem producing decent flares with it.

on another note..think thats copper pipe you have there?

have a search online , its frowned upon by alot of people as it can work harden and crack

what they say is best is cunifer , beal.org.uk sell for about the same price you pay for copper and its fit and forget

I have heard this about copper pipes work hardening and failing, I've never had a problem myself or spoken to anyone who has actually had a problem. Although like everyone I've read the forums and heard the "experts" but it never seems to be first hand. It's always "This bloke I know" or "I was told by so and so"

So does anyone have first hand experience of brake pipes failing because they were made of copper rather than any other reason?

Yes i've seen them fail on a few occasions, I was telling a guy who disbelieved on a forum a while ago and one of the guys reading it posted a pic of his brake pipe that had fractured right behind the flare which is where it usually goes.

Would you really take the chance when you consider your only saving £2 ???

I've had copper pipes corrode through in salty environments

I bought one that mounts in a vice.
Clamp the pipe in with the female formers and the flare is formed by pulling on a lever that forces the male former onto the pipe.
Cant use it when the pipes are insitu but it creates very good flares.

Got mine from Snap-on in around '72. Still works fine and does sizes up to 3/8".
Lent it out a few times and it was returned every time with an offer to buy it. But the reason I bought it was working on my daily ride at night and being worried about disconnecting brake lines in case something broke. Don't need to worry about that now, but it is too good to part with.

Don't get me wrong I do use Kunifer, my regular supplier doesn't even carry copper any more.

I was just asking the question, despite many years (too many) of messing around with old cars I've never come across a copper brake pipe problem or met any one who has, the horror stories always seem to be second hand.It just seems a bit odd to me which is why I asked the question.
