Brake pipe flaring tool

Got the new tool through, it certainly marks the pipe much less, but still produces tiny ears, nowhere near to the same degree so I'm happy with that, flare looks a bit odd though and I followed the instructions to the letter, any tips?

Also does anyone know where I can get brass M10 x 1mm short type fitting with no lead for a reasonable price? I got 20 of the lead type for under £15 posted but the cheapest I've seen the no lead type for are £2.17 EACH + postage.

The lead type only catches around 3 or 4 threads on the fittings

I have, they only have steel.

they really are tiny, where the 2 sides on the die meet, you can just see them in the pic.

yeah i can see em ..is it marked at the back edge of where it clamps too?

wonder if the copper is slightly oversize...i really dont get any marks at all

edit i just nip mine up with a spanner ..are you doing the same?

it is a bit but that may be due to the pipe not being perfectly straight. it's just cheap copper for practice. I'll have a go with the cunifer.

I'm happy enough to use them though. if I can find cheaper nuts. they shouldn't cost more than the bloody pipe. don't understand why no lead nuts are so much more expensive.

I have heard this about copper pipes work hardening and failing, I've never had a problem myself or spoken to anyone who has actually had a problem. Although like everyone I've read the forums and heard the "experts" but it never seems to be first hand. It's always "This bloke I know" or "I was told by so and so"

So does anyone have first hand experience of brake pipes failing because they were made of copper rather than any other reason?

Not first hand sooo. But the copper oil pipes on WW1 rotary aircraft engines were annealed at regular intervals (20 hrs?) to stop them cracking from fatigue.

If you are still getting ears you are tightening them up too much, you only need to nip them up so they don't slip, keep practising you'll get there.

I think its one of Sykes Pickavant, got an almost identical one, with a load of punches and dies, all sizes Imp and metric, brilliant piece of kit sadly-- at a price

The sykes ones are about the best, but not great for on the car flaring.

I have an Automec and it also produces really nice flares. I've got a Sykes Flaremaster 2 for on car work. Absolutely brilliant bit of kit

Just started my brake lines and using the tool my mate lent me, not sure what brand it is but it works a treat.

I found the brake flaring tool my mate lent me that works perfectly, it’s sold by Frost for £139. They also have roles of copper nickel pipe for £17.60.
