More efficient bolt croppers?

Have you got a flypress MR Chunkolini ?
Coz you could use the cutters from bolt croppers to adapt to the flypress and use that as a cutter

Most bench mounted metal shears have the facility for cutting bar, simply a hole cut through one shearing blade at the rear with an adjustable length stop. Doesn't your big orange and black turbo nutter b'stard swish army metal bender tool thingamajig have an option for cutting bar?

I am wary of buying hard working gear secondhand as it usually up for sale due to age issues. What do you guys think of the last two options.

I think that I'd rather buy something second hand which is used by the emergency services (and will be repairable if broken),
than new from eastern europe.
If it doesn't work, the second hand one could go back on ebay for about what you paid. You'd be lucky to get 50% on the Eastern European one - the "one year RTS warranty" won't be worth the electrons it's written on.

Flypress? sounds a bit brutal on 6m bars, also I have to be mm accurate, using the cropper on my bench shears does cut well but it is hard to be that accurate, an end stop would not work as each pice is made to fit a specific gap.
To measure them I just hold a piece of bar by the gap, use my thumb as a line to cut to. Quick and accurate.

If it were me... One of those hydraulic cutting thingys mentioned earlier, but instead of the manual pump, which is too slow, a motorized pump with an acumulator. This would store enough pressure to make a few cuts quickly and keep topping itself up. On the practical level, I have an ABS pump on the shelf which has an acumulator incorporated. Not sure of the capacity, but it used to keep up with the brakes on a Jeep. Most Citroens have acumulators as part of their suspension system, so an easy find in the yard. They also have the belt drive pumps, but not sure of the operating pressure.

Mixing power and measuring with your thumb nail might produce a few clippings, but hay ho

You get a different finished end to round stock from a sheared cut compared to bolt croppers, which do you prefer for welding? If you can stop the stock rotating each cut end will look the same.

I don't think hydraulic cutting will be quick enough for how you want to work making the parts on the fly.

Probably bolt croppers give a nice V to weld into. Hence my idea to speed up the process.

I am after speed and convenience.
I will visit my local hydraulics engineer and see if he can suggest anything.
I was wondering if a small pump and set of jaws might do the job.
Something like this

This is claimed to cut up to 20mm rebar and costs £70.00
I know nowt about hydraulics and their costs.
I found some prices for electric rebar cutters several hundreds of pounds.

I was thinking speed of production then I considered British Standard Chunkolini Thumbnail and a 24tpi hacksaw blade for betterer accuracy. (Don't nip the thumbnail or you get accumulative error.)

Think you need to sort out how to measure and clamp them, decide how fast you need to work. That will suggest an obvious method of powered severing device.
We use huge hand held hydraulic cutters at work, most of the lads feel queasy when they first see them sat still, never mind in action.

Personally, I'd invent something big and hand operated with a negative pressure so it would instantly release on a miscalculation.

I can use chalk or marker pen to avoid finger amputation, but would need to be able hand hold the piece being cut.

I did and took production methods out of my head as it's a hand made frog! How about handing the hack saw to your apprentice who can be cutting whilst you weld or put a kickstart on the bolt cutters like a treadle guilotine?

Some of the electric hydraulic pumps are pretty quick, we have one that swages ends on stainless wire, very fast.

Is a short cutting torch with a biggish nozzle quick enough to gas through them? Haven't you got oxy prop already? Used with an economiser should be ok for stop start stuff?
