Exhaust for a stationary engine

The couple of replies since I started typing... talk about flexable mountings. Don't do it. They need to be well bolted down to hefty bases. Vibration will destroy the control units. As in. the solenoids that control the decompressor and the fuel control. Been there....

strange that, all of the pumps that i've seen are rubber mounted in /on their frames which are usually massive box section in a H pattern the box then forms the chassis and fuel tank , because pumps need to be qiet also, they don't have auto start but do have auto stop controls on them. None seem to vibrate enough to damage anything.
Ps a mate used to work in sound studios, and a cheap sound deadening medium are egg boxes (cardboard type) glued to the wall painted with fire resistant paint it is the shape that deflects the sound from the walls.

Norm, I only worked on Lister gensets and the solid mounting was important for them. Sometimes the little Petters had flex mountings, but they were pretty awfull as a sole supply of lecky. Good point about the egg boxes.

Since Lister technology is mostly prewar (choose which one) more modern units might have a bit more dynamic design to avoid vibrations at their operating RPM. And usually multicylinder, which makes it easier. Stopping a single leaping around has got to be difficult.

All the gen sets I work on have been mounted on anti vibration mounts and that includes lister sets 20kva upto 1mw set

Yeh, I was just saying though that the quiet, powered pumps are on rubbers, my mate has a H3 powered 3ph 25 kva unit, he has put his on anti vibs and seems ok.
Have just spoken to the guy with the pumps and he said the very old pumps with the singles were solid mounted, plus, he said he probably will have something there for the exhaust.
But has scrapped off most of those engines.

dont suppose you still have this genset do you? i am currently restoring one that looks quite similar, single cylinder lister but mounted on a trolley so its portable, if you have it dont suppose you could take a close up foto of the plate on the generator itself as the one im working on is missing any makers info, thanks in advance

If you have welding skills, you will find that most of the scrap exhausts in exhaust replacement companies skips only have minor rust holes, or broken mountings which can easily be patched or repaired. Basically you have an unlimited supply of free exhausts for projects, and many come with long lengths of steel tube attached.

Stationary engines used to have a big cast iron exhaust pot buried in the ground.

You can use a 205l drum concreted underground. It's a cheap and easy former for a pit and comes with an inlet and an outlet built in. If you put a T junction onto either the inlet or the outlet, you can pop a submersible pump in if ever needed.

I daisy chained two drums underground to silence a vane vacuum pump. Worked really well.
