We did this to death in the other thread that ended up getting locked but the welder would have to be 'competent' as the aircraft would be subject to an FAA airworthiness check and if it wasn't built to the required standard a certificate of airworthiness would not be issued. They do not have to be 'coded'.

I should have added more to what I said..... NO it does not take a certified welder, but yes it takes an experienced welder to do it

In fairness the OP got a fair bit of flak in that other thread but it now seems it's perfectly feasible to do though there are a lot of regulations governing building and flying it.
Anyhoo, that's that out of the way so back to this thread.

But the fact still remains that someone with no tig competence should not be welding up anything let alone an aircraft !!!
Even with tig it's possible to get a lovely looking weld with little penetration

That's a bit bigger than my garage. On TIG I have no problems as there is no real bad fumes on mild steel.

Using stick, I do have to open the garage door a bit to vent the smoke out. I use a 20" box fan with a 20x20 HVAC filter taped to it.. Gas MIG is clean too.

I do keep a fire extinguisher handy. My bench is heavy steel so no worries about burning things.

Lift start will be ok. Scratch start is not bad if you have a foot control (so you can start a a low current.)

You will also need a 220V outlet, 30A. If the breaker panel is in the garage, it is not difficult to add one. You can't do much on a regular 120V outlet; even if you did, it would have to be a dedicated one.

How much did it cost you to make your ventilation system?

I don't see it as flaming, I'm just downright amazed that there are people prepared to help someone do something that is downright dangerous, sometimes this forum amazes me !!! I won't post on this again.

I made a peddle switch for my lift tig as sometimes you need very fine control of the tungsten and it's hard to press the button on the torch and keep it bang on.. ok for you old timers I guess...lol

I'm optimistic. Has anyone heard of the Dunning Kruger effect? Basically people who don't know what they're doing don't realise how little they know and people who are really good underestimate themselves because they assume everyone else is just as good.

But the good news is it only takes a little bit of training to show the people who think they're better than they are how much they have still to learn. So chances are long before DairyFarmer gets near welding up an airframe he will realise how bad an idea it is to try.

I was told practice makes perfect. And I don't believe that, I believe perfect practice makes perfect, so if I never perfect what I'm doing, I won't attempt it
