TIG pedal vs. trigger on gun

Most of these things are made in China then re branded. How good/reliable can be a bit hit and miss. I don't know about Everlast , I don't think we have that brand over here. But if it's a well known respected brand they should be OK. Some are made to higher spec to be accepted . So an Everlast could be a better machine than an identical looking no name machine. How long a warranty they are willing to give could be a clue to how confident they are in the machine. Having said that it's worth remembering that as with most things you get what you pay for. Lincoln, Hobart, Miller, Esab, Lorch, etc are expensive for a reason.

I'd probably put a bit more towards one with lift or HF start.

Tbh, they're rare over here too, again, most people who want variable control use a pedal.
Lorch do one but it's only compatible with their own machines and they're very expensive.
Miller also do one but again, it looks like it's only compatible with their own machines.

The advise i'd give to anyone looking to get a tig but doesn't need AC is,

Getting one with these following features as a minimum requirement...
Hf start, slope in-out and adjustable gas post flow,
Foot pedal compatable would be a bonus to be able to step up to later.

They offer a year warranty, but I think the Hobart I'm looking at is also a year

A 20CF bottle will last about an hour of use.

Mine is 125CF; next one I'll upgrade to 230CF. I started with an 80CF.

Talk to your gas supplier.

I bought a 30lb CO2 tank off ebay (for MIG). I almost purchased an 80CF argon tank for $180 + shipping.

Gas supplier charged $163 for 80CF argon bottle; 125CF was a $17 upgrade.

I handed them my nice new CO2 bottle and the gave me back an old beat up one. They don't refill bottles, the just swap them. So buying a new is a waste of money.

Airgas is my supplier. Now, our school's MIG welders have 80% CO2 and 20% Argon gas. Is that what I should get for the MIG? What about the TIG? Isn't it pure Argon that I need?

TIG is pure argon.

MIG is argon/CO2.

Dairy farmer, as far as I can make out Everlast machines seem quite similar to some of the RTech machines sold here. Clearly of Chinese origin, but with backup in your own country. They may have had a hand in speccing the machines too, as they are clearly a step up from the WSME standard Chinese designs seen cheapest on eBay.

That WeldingTipsandTricks guy seems to be an Everlast fan, he may even be sponsored, but he does quite a few of his videos with them. Looking at forums that talk about them, seem to have a reasonable reputation as a mid range supplier. If I was buying my machine again but in the US I'd certainly look them up.

As for pedal vs torch switch, I tend to use the torch switch, pulse and slope in/out on most of my clean mild steel welding, whereas for aluminium it'd be the pedal. I must learn to hold the pedal in some other positions as suggested earlier - sounds very useful!

Make sure you buy a flow meter for your gas cylinders, not just a gauge one either, whatever gas cylinder size you get it'll make sure you get maximum use from it and reduce another vbariale so your welding is more consistent.

I'm pretty sure the Everlast Auto Arc 140 has a flow meter on the torch kit

The machine is sold very cheaply, if they threw everything including the kitchen sink in with it they'd have to up the price considerably and people probably wouldn't buy them.

I have both thumb wheel on torch and a pedal and to honest I very rarely use the thumb wheel because its awkward, the pedal on the other hand is a extremely flexible thing to use and I personally wouldn't be without it for the reasons chevy2 mentioned.

Its funny how its each to their own, we used to have that thumb wheel for our miller plants, I thought they were excellent, better to use than the slider, reason was because on the slider sometimes I struggle to reach the full range of amps with out changing hand position where as with the wheel you just roll your thumb over until the desired amps,

one other thing about the pedal its just another cable to get tangled in everything

just my opinion.
