Quality chopsaw

As I am rather fond of high quality diy tools I decided to purchase myself a chopsaw recently and finally got round to using it today to cut some metal supports for a pocket door and was that impressed I thought I would add a recommendation for it.

Its amazing how the right tool for the job can make it so much easier and can be worth its weight in gold, so if you are after a good quality tct chopsaw for metalworking I highly recommend the Makita LC1230 TCT Metal cutting Chop Saw.

Not cheap (about £350 with a free second blade) but then again good equipment never is !!

are all chop saws really noisy? Im looking at getting one in the next week or so and dont want to p*ss my neighbours off anymore than i already do with my grinders.

Can anyone recommend a quieter machine?

A band saw is a lot quieter but slower.
Then again a chop saw is noisy but a lot quicker than an angle grinder, maybe a bit noiser but it is over quicker.

im not too fused about the speed as i work from the shed at the bottom of the garden. I have asked all the surrounding neighbors and there adamant that im not being too noisy. Im thinking of security too as we do have some really nasty gypsies around our way(they were in the news recently over people trafficking!!!!) and i dont want them to take an interest when hearing a grinder when there driving around ringing a bell looking for scrap.

A quick look on ebay and metal band saws arent that cheap in comparison to chop saws

I had a abrasive cut off saw which was very noisy and the fumes off it were terrible so I got this bandsaw, it is quiet and gives a square cut, just get bi metal blades as they last longer.

I have a Clarke bandsaw and a Nu Tool (Aldi) cut off saw.

The cut off saw is fast and fairly accurate but yes it's noisy, don't think I have seen any that are quiet, regardless of the make or cost and it can thow around a fair bit of dust etc.

The bandsaw, which you have to remember is Clarkes Chinese best, was a pleasant surprise, I was not expecting it to be as good as it is, obviously not as fast as the chop saw but very quiet, in fact I have cut steel at 11pm at night with no neighbour probs at all, can't hear it outside the garage.

I would be more than happy to buy the Clarke again but if I was doing a fair amount of work I would buy a more professional brand of bandsaw.

I don't like those abrasive chop saws: Nosiey, smelly things, vibrating your teeth out. And they eat discs. Langy's Chop saw is the best type, but hard to find at that price (I should know I looked for he long enough)

For the small Home/workshop I don't think you can beat a MM bandsaw. They work just fine, so long as you treat it with respect.

The Makita is pretty damn accurate as far as I can see, the clamp holds the work piece securely and the blade gives quick accurate cuts.

Can't imagine any TCT chopsaw being particularly quiet in operation to be honest !

Just wear ear defenders, I do for almost all noisy DIY/work jobs as I have already had my hearing damaged from using noisy machinery without ear defenders.

One thing, if you are cutting small bits of the ends of larger bits watch out where they go.
I had a four inch pice of 8mm bar go through the front of a plastic tool box about 12 feet away. These days I have a small plate that I clamp the offcut to.

Nobody singing the virtues of a good old fashioned power hacksaw then?

I've had one for years, never goes wrong, blades cost nothing and last for ever, will cut through anything and no need to wear ear defenders ...ok they might be a little slow, but I've usually got all day

On reflection of price its probably going to be one of these or a band saw like in the pics above.

I do have my eye on a saw but will have to wait til the weekend to hear about it
