I've only had arc eye a few times mainly from someone esles welding, they say if you see the arc from the side it damages the eye more than if you looked at it full on.
When i first had it i went to A&E, but the pain only lasts about a day, It feels like you have sand in your eyes, Rubbing it makes it worse. Just grin and bear it and have a day off
I do think the more you have arc eye the more resistant you tend to become to UV, i've not had arc eye now for a good 10 years and i work with about 15 welders

Pulse sets are a killer for arc burn. 15 mins with someone holding bits in place while they tack and you can feel the heat has got to your face.

Best done in hospital as i would be putting drops after drops in my eye and that can be dangerous

I've had arc-eye a couple of times. A very nasty experience indeed.
Asked chemist what he had for it and he said "Whats arc-eye" !
Anyway got this stuff-

and it helped a bit. Basically its a lube. But time is the only real cure.

Feckinell, that looks dangerous, only a shade 8/9 too, I like an 11-1/2 setting on my helmet.
Says it for tight spaces but surely if you can get that in there, you can get your head with a helmet on in too?

I recall a friend mig welding the seams of a Mk1 Escort rally shell many years ago.
He spent quite a while inside the shell with just a pair of gas welding goggles to protect his eyes.
When he came into work on the Monday he had two white circles around a pair of watery eyes in a very red face.

Besides arc eye I've also had welders ear ! A ball of molten splatter from MIG went into my ear, burnt a hole thought the drum and when I shook my head it burnt another hole on exit. 12 months of hospital appointments and they decided not to do a skin graft but the scar tissue on my ear drum affects my hearing. Yet another part of the body to protect !

No, but there are usually international symbols near the ratings plate with gloves and a face with a mask and a picture of a book and a crossed out dustbin and all the rest.
I'd guess the reason they always seem to chuck in a little plastic hand held mask is to cover themselves against people who might use the machine with no form of eye protection.
