That's what I'm looking at at the moment, wondering about welding a new abutment on the driven dog to eliminate the free movement.

Would it be possible to build up the damaged area with a hard facing rod and then re-grind it I wonder?

Thats what i was planning to do with mine graham, i don't see any other way. I don't understand the design , the male dogs have far too much free movement before they meet the female dogs, if the gear is changed while the motor is running it means the dogs give each other a right whack.

I was thinking of modifying it along these lines



The bits in blue are added to reduce the free movement and make sure the male dog doesn't engage in the wrong place.

Looks good to me - personally I wouldn’t be to hung up on the backlash - it's no big deal backing the chuck up before switching on. On the other hand, you clearly need to do some work on it anyway so you might as well improve that while you are at it. I hope it goes well.

Quite, I wouldn't bother if nothing needed doing, but there's always the chance you'd forget or let someone else use it.

Looking at the machined-out area of the clutch, the finish is left very rough, I wonder if this was deliberate so that the driven part started moving, before the clutch engaged, due to drag through the oil? Sort of synchromesh.

Yes, I noticed that - I think it's a result of the method they used to machine it.

I think I'd fix it by buying a new one Are they a hardenable material or just mild steel ? Tig weld the worn bit and recut the mating face if they are mild.

Hardened.

I think brand new would be out of the question, certainly can't find anything on the 'net. I guess any from scrap drills would be pretty much in the same state.

I wouldn't bother with the backlash, it's an old machine that's possibly had a lot of use, and look at the little bit of damage it's suffered. Will you give it such a hard life? I doubt it! Certainly you will give it more respect! Build it back up with TIG. Rod? What's it made from?

Not sure what the gear's made from, except that it's steel and very hard!

Decided to keep it original, took it to Exotic Metal Fabricators Welders, Sheffield, to have it hard faced, seemed a pretty routine job to them.

As for turning the spindle I do this anyway when I change drill bits in order to use all three holes for tightening the chuck.

They are a really nicely made drill , the achilles heel is the problem we are having with the wear in the driving dogs. In all fairness they were probabily never intended to last as long as they have. Mine must be very old , but is in excellent condition.

They're certainly solid, the bench mounted version weighs 115 Kilos.

I've not got it (the gear) back yet, they're charging me £20 to fill and hard-face the damaged bits. Then I've got to grind it back to size.

That sounds like a pretty competitive price to me. Do you think a place like that would fill the holes in my table or is it best just to live with it (like I have for 20 odd years already)?

That's a thought, don't see why not. I suspect ordinary mild steel would be OK for that job.

Maybe some of the magic metal compounds would be OK?

I've got a progress No1 sat in bits in the garage. That's got the same basic chassis as yours and I can confirm how bloody heavy it is!!

I'll post a thread on mine at some point when I get around to putting it back together. The uppermost bearing on the spindle drive pulley had gone dry and seized on mine, which wore a huge groove on the pulley shaft. I've got a full set of bearings for mine now, but need to blag someone to do a tiny lathe job for me before it can all go back together. I've got a sealed replacement bearing for the uppermost one as the design/gravity will always allow the grease to run away and dirt to enter the open one.
