who knows about landrover pto's then, l have been given a sunday 300 tdi disc which seems to run well enough, l have a need to mow a big field this year every 2 weeks or so to beat the docs into submission, l have a big tow behind hayter mower, it is usally fed with a shaft from a tractor which turns a hyd pump which turn the blades but l dont have a working tractor but l do have a free disco so the questions begin , l assume a pto on the back of a landrover lt77 or R380 gearbox will be driven of the main shaft ?, is this affected by which gear l am in ? but the low box will have no effect on pto speed ? so l can select low box and change between 1 2 and 3 on the main box to find a suitable road speed to mow, does 5 to 10 mph sound about right to mow at ?
anyone know how fast the pto would be turning at 10 mph when l am in low box ??

the pto into the mower from a tractor turns at 540 rpm l think, it then goes through a 3 to one gearbox so l think the pump is looking for around 1500 rpm ?

l guess l could run a prop to the mower input or remove the pump on the mower and fit it to the gear box extending the hyd hoses ??

suggestions, other than fix my tractor ??

Driven through the transfer box, but at the same speed as the output of the gearbox.

PTO gear for LR is hard to get hold of. I'd give Dom@LRseries a call he might be able to help you out

The PTO on my Jeep ran off the transmission before the transfer case. So, the transfer case would select the PTO speed vs the wheel speed.

On a LR the transfer case bolts directly to the G/box, there is a round cover on the end of the t/case that allows connection of auxiliary equipment, such as PTO winches and hydraulic pumps

if pto stuff is dear then another option which just popped into my head is to take the pump of the trailed mower and mount it on the engine and chain drive it off the crank pulley, this offers me the chance to alter the gearing to get it to run at optimum revs ( once l know what that is ) but also it would be live all the time and not stop when l am stationary or have the clutch in which just having a quick read of the land rover forums is a problem with mowers,
l could just run two pipes to the back bumper and have quick release fittings

There is a space on the front timing cover on the 300tdi for a air on pump or secondary alternator (search eBay and you will find the listing for the bracket to mount alternator) you could mount a pump there

Land rover pto equipment is eyewateringly expensive and you have one major problem with this you will only achive groundspeed output from the back of the transfer case, unless stationary.
Not the best case scenario for a hydraulic powered mower, off the front timing cover with a hydraulic pump is probably the best way to go, I would run it through a resevoir tank with a spool valve mounted in the cabin.
And your quickfits mounted to the rear bumper if this the way you want to go.
The 300tdi peak torque is at around 195ftlbs @ 1800 rpm, you have 540pto into a 1-3 gearbox = 1620 rpm so your 180 rpm off peak torque output (these are published figures for new or exceptionally well maintained engines)

180 rpm dont sound a lot but lugging two ton plus mower (I am assuming it is a gang type hydraulic mower) around could leave the hydraulics struggling or revving the guts out of the engine.

there are three possible other solutions.

1, mount a two or three pot diesel engine on the mower to run at around 1500 rpm (usual ball park figure for peak torque) and fit a step down gearbox between the flywheel and input shaft to give 540rpm out the back.
2, sell the hydraulic unit and get a ground drive set
3, repair the tractor

The last one could be the cheaper option depending on how bad the tractor is..

There is one other way of doing this that I have just thought of, you could get a hydraulic pto set up, this would consist of a hydraulic pump off the crank to a hydraulic pto at the rear.
Then back to a reserve tank in the back of the disco, check out flowfit they do all this knid of stuff at not too silly a price.

yes gang mowers like this

l did start off thinking of extending the length of the front bar and mounting an
engine on it but came round to the conclusion that a pto drive would be simpler, but maybe not then

you are of course right repairing the tractor would be best lol

will ponder this some more

Can you use the power steering pump like the milemarker system or a second one mounted in the secondary alternator position .

plus them mowers are set for a pto input to raise/lower the cutters

the tdi is around 110 bhp ? so we have the power ? we just need to get it to the mowers ?

or thinking outside the box as they say, chain drive of the front crank pulley sideways to another shaft tat runs to the back and then to the mower ?

fit an old engine onto the mowers if your not gonna get a tractor

50 to drive the mowers wont leave much left to drive the disco

You might find a spare v on the bottom pulley o the TDI that could power a pump

l might throw the disco body away as its so rotten/damaged, shorten the chassis down to 80" and fit my spare jago body on it, that should get rid of some weight and l can get a tan while l mow

i said at least 50 to drive the mowers

i got a flail hedgecutter on a 120 hp tractor
its 4 ft cut and when mowing grass it WILL pull the engine back

small diesels are expensive.

get the engine and gearbox out a 2.5 simely frount transit.

botch it into back of disco, connect PTO to end of tansit gearbox.
