can i drive a agricultural vehicle to a pre booked mot

i have a land rover that is currently registered as limited use for agriculture

i am going to reregister it for road use

i have been told i need to have a mot before i can reregister it by the dvla

can i drive it to the mot centre if it is booked in as it is further than 6.1 miles away which is the distance i am allowed to travel

As long as you have insurance you can drive it to an MOT station. We just had the same thing with my daughter's Corsa which was a class C and has had to have a VIC which needed MOT first.

It is perfectly legal to drive a car to an MOT testing station for a pre booked test, and it doesn't need tax either. You must be insured though, and the car must be in a roadworthy condition (this applies whether or not it has an MOT). That doesn't mean you can drive anywhere you like on the way to or from the test mind, just to the testing place and back using a reasonably direct route.

If it fails the test it cannot by definition be in a roadworthy condition - make sure your car is in good order before taking to the testing station, and better still leave it at a garage that can do he work for you

Not sure where you go the 6.1 miles from, but i asumme they would mean by sending you to the nearest MOT testing centre, after all they should all test to the same standard

You may need to inform HMRC if thats the case as the dye will still stain fresh fuel. I've been told the HMRC do a checmical test nowdays to check for duty free diesel, They don't go by the colour any more, only as a 1st method check

currently the tank is leaking so i will have to change it before i take if for a mot so will fill it up with white and drive around a bit at home to try and get most of the dye out of the system as ive heard it can raise the emmisions

As we are now using the ultra low sulphur diesel in tractors and have been for some months now, this is ordinary derv with the dye added, they could no longer get away with the old lower grade as the newer tractors with common rail were having problems hitting their emmission targets.
And it was and still is if fuel cleanliness is neglected wrecking the pump and injectors.

Be aware when you change the tank to force clean white diesel through the whole system and to remove the return from the injector overspill back to tank and waste this into a seperate container and use it to keep warm

This is because the dye and chemical markers are persistant little blighters and WILL contaminate the new tank, from what remains in the fuel filter, lines and injector pump body.
You have a perfectly legitimate excuse for now, but you could be stopped 12 months down the line and they can detect the smallest amount and no amount of protesting will help.
Get it right from the start and you should have no problems..

IIRC when you register a car for agricultural use
you can only use it on public roads within 1.5km
of the registered address
but i would think that if you are going to an mot
you would be ok

Strictly speaking I believe that you can only drive it on the road between your own (or rented) land holdings. You can however drive directly to a pre-booked MOT with no deviations. I was once 'done' in such a situation when I stopped at the local cash machine to withdraw cash for the MOT, and although the 'deviation' was only pulling into a parking recess it counted as 'not direct'

IIRC correctly, you can drive six miles on red diesel, as you might be doing contracting etc. Over that then they reckon you're not using it as an agricultural vehicle. Why anyone would want to go miles on a tractor, even on red diesel, when a car uses less than half the fuel is beyond me of course...

a farmer i work for traveled 70 miles to pick 2 trailers up he bought cheap put one trailer on top of the other and towed them back .it didnt take him long as new tractors fair shift . cheaper than hiring a wagon

as far as i know a tractor can drive any distance from the farm to get to work or whatever

the 6 mile rule is for vehicles like land rovers etc that are registered for agricultural purposes

you wouldnt want to drive 200 miles in a tractor but a discovery or whatever may be more attractive

thats why the rule is there

More and more tractors are used on the roads to carry large loads. I think one of the main reasons is. The age you can drive one= low wages. and also low Road TAX

UK Road laws dictate tractors can only have a maximum speed of 18MPH and gross with a braked trailer a maximum of 24000KG Gross... The taxation Law on distance was abolished however if its taxed and on Red Diesel It can only be used to haul as part of the Agricultural business it is Registered too, theres lots of quircks ie if you haul a digger to contract job and use the tractor on site that is quite legal, just drop the digger off and go and its not...

Modern Tractors have left the legislation behind and are capable of speeds up to 60K and have towing capacity's on air braked trailers of 24000KGs Gross alone, There quite safe to do this and are legal within Europe, however UK Law has not kept up, At some point MOTs plated trailers and duel line safety brakes will become Mandatory I'm sure.

UK Laws dictate Tractors are not legal for commercial haulage, the only exception being Fastracs and Unimogs, However if used within this way they must be Taxed as an HGV, Run Plated trailers and be on white diesel and Taco'ed... There are a few I know who have been subject to both VOSA and HMRC on these machines....

If I'm not mistaken, the law was for unsprung vehicles, which is mostly tractors, but not specifically. What has happened is that tractor makers have figured out how to fit suspension for haulage work, with some having lockable suspension so you can use it in a field with a plough on the back. Different regs apply to these. I may have lost track but I thought the limit was 50kph if you have a sprung front, i.e.steering axle.
