Wheel banding...

Not really looking to do them myself as my welding is probably not up to scratch

But I am quite keen to get my hands on some.. Don't want to pay bandedsteels.com prices and I have also read a whole bunch of bad reviews.. I am on JamesP's waiting list on retrorides but it's been about four months now and he hasn't answered my messages.. so I'm looking elsewhere.

Does anyone know of anyone doing them in the North West at all? Or does anyone on here make them?

Yeah they are as far as I'm aware.. providing they are well made etc..

Basically you part off steel wheels so the rim is separated, then roll a piece of steel and weld it into the gap.. thus widening the wheels/making them dishy.

Rob, there's several threads on the subject that a search for 'banded' should find. Might provide a few more leads? If you haven't already i'm thinking find out whether you'll be able to insure the car properly first.

that can't be road legal, or safe @ any thing above waking speed.

What's it going to do to the steering geometry

They are standard tyres Jugs, stretched to fit the wider rims to ensure they don't foul the wheel arches. I can't believe they're legal either, tyres just aren't meant to be used like that.

look in the search box wheelbanding theres a load of posts on em. i used to band rear wheels for stock cars. only certain wheels are strong enough to do them and never used on the front end just rear

I had some rims once that had been widened in a better way than banding.The center section of the wheel had been cut out and welded to a wider section rim.Voila, possilby far easier to align than banding.

Sorry, i know this still a bit off topic but FWIW combos that meet TUV and tyre manufacturers guidlines can still look stupidly stretched to many of us. For example...

Google pic of a 195/45R15 on an 8x15 rim. The calculator on http://www.carbibles.com/tyre_bible_pg4.html gives 6.5 - 8x15 rim width for that tyre size. Google hit to another forum listing various combos that supposidly satisfy the TUV/tyre manufactuers... http://www.edition38.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=121542

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VIP_style although what i posted is more a caricature really... a bit of one upmanship regarding who can fit the biggest wheels led to tyre stretching, then silly amounts of negative camber and pretty soon you end up with something unusable and it's <cough> art...
